Just had to have the torsion spring on the garage door replaced. Thought the 30 year old genie opener was going south, bought a new opener. Checked the balance of the door and couldn't even budge it. Looked up and the right hand spring was broken in half. Called the overhead door company and they came out and replaced it an hour later. Just wondering how often do those things break. Cost as much as the new opener, checked the old opener still works so I took the new one back. Repacking it kind of blew but what the hay.

I had one break a couple years ago after 15 years of use, and when the garage door repair guy came out to replace it I asked him that same question. He said as a rule of thumb the springs are good for about 10,000 cycles. I figured it out, (15 year old spring x 365 days/year x opening the garage door twice a day on average = 10,950) and his rule of thumb was pretty close.
