How often do you come across Torx sizes bigger than 50?
I have 8-50 in bit sockets, but I don't want to run into a job and have to go out and buy a socket, I'd rather already have it in my toolbox.

I'm mostly looking for the automotive/motorcycle purposes, I'm sure Boeing's have them but I'm pretty sure I'm never turning a wrench on a Boeing.

If you do say I need them, which to get? 55/60 or even bigger than that?
I'm assuming bigger than 50 is 1/2'' drive, but I can't find them on the snap on website anymore. Gear wrench has them, and so does lisle but I don't know if they're any good.

Any info would be great!

For automotive and medium/heavy trucks, I don't recall needing anything bigger. If I had money burning a hole in my pocket and wanted to buy torx, I'd look at torx plus as they are showing up more and more on modern cars.......depends what you work on though, maybe the double hex, triple square.............hell, buy 'em all.:D

Haha, at some point I hope to have it all, but for now I'm kinda on a strict buy what I need budget. I remember reading some seatbelts are T55 I believe, but I'm not sure that's right.

I've used some t55 and t60's but for the life of me I can't remember what for offhand, however I do know I have needed them at least a couple of times. May have been for the caliper slides on certain GMT800 trucks or utilities, but those may have been 50's.

I've run into t55 and t60. Most recently found a t60 holding the oil filter housing on a jeep cherokee. Had to remove the bit from the socket and put a wrench around the hex though.

I understand. That said, you need every size of torx in every configuration, long, stubby, standard, tamper proof, torx+, torx+ tamper proof .......................see where I'm going? :D Oops! I forgot about universals. You'll need those too. :spit:

See now that's interesting, I'm in the process of finding an XJ to buy and fix up so I definitely need a T-60.

Now I just need a decent brand that has all of the sizes.

Has anyone ever used the gear wrench variant?

Sanp-On makes a T55 in both 3/8" and 1/2" drive.

To be complete thay make:
T55
T60
T70
T80
T90

They are all right there in teh bit socket section.
Std. set they sell only goes up to T55 though.

Oh please tell me where to find this magical T57 Unicorn tool beacuse the GM seatbelt and interior bolts I remove daily tend to be T50, T55 or T60, except for those that are Torx Plus.

I've looked in every category on the snap on website for torx bit sockets, and I've only been able to find this: http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/tools.asp?tool=hand&Group_ID=682626&store=snapon-store

Which they no longer make, and this: http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/tools.asp?tool=hand&Group_ID=682627&store=snapon-store

But I'd really rather have standard length ones.
Can you point me in the right direction?

I work mainly on autos and light trucks, foreign and domestic........

I have a T60 I purchased and used. Faint recollection it was for my neice's Monte Carlo front brake pad replacement.

I've also a T70 but can't remember why! It's used though and it's in my box so I purchased it for something!

I'd never purchase tools "just because". Ha ha ha ha! Hansen organizers come to mind? MUST FILL!!!!!! 1/8" 1/4" drive deep and shallow, I've got them to fill the Empty peg! :)

GM brake caliper brackets use the T60 sometimes. They're weird bolts with a big spacer on them, and they can be ridiculously tight. I actually broke my T60 on one once, the bit survived but the socket part broke at the drive plug hole.

Older Chevy Cavaliers use a T55 on the front hub assemblies. I know I've used the 55 on a few other things as well.

I knew I'd used a T55 somewhere on my '93 Sunbird (mechanically the same car as a Cavalier). That jogged my memory, because I did change the hub/bearing assemblies once.

It's actually a t-55. I just changed the o rings on my oil filter adapter on my 95 zj. Not sure on the xj's but make sure you get a socket that you can remove the torx bit from the socket body because you can't fit a socket and ratchet between the adapter and the body frame. I used the bit and a 12mm ratchet wrench to remove the bolt on the adapter.

Okay, thanks guys. I'm definitely keen on getting T55 and T60 now to complete the set.
I just have to find a brand that I like that has them both in bit socket form.

Jag front suspensions use T60 bolts. I have this Ace set which has T40-T60 all in 3/8" drive, although you're right, I do want the T60 in 1/2" drive, which is why I'm getting a Grey Pneumatic 1/2" impact T60. If you just want a 1/2" drive set that should cover everything, and on the cheap, you should probably get this Harbor Freight T30-T60 1/2" drive impact set. It appears to be a set of rebranded Grey Pneumatic sockets, and as long as you're buying more than one or two, I'd say it's a hell of a deal.

That HF set looks like just what I need, seeing that it's all 1/2'' drive.
For that price it's hard to beat, thanks!

won't really affect you Americans but a lot of french stuff uses T55 for head bolts.

Generally only able to use in 3/8 drive as a 1/2 socket won't fit in the hole and often long ones are not man enough or long enough to reach.

Female torx are the usual these days in Euro market with an increase in Ribe and spline.

T-55 on the front brakes of Chevy Silverado's
and a T60 to remove the seatbelt (if you need to pull the front seats). I've used T55 a number of time but that was the first time I needed a T60, have yet to need anything bigger but I'd recommend at least a T55 and T60. I've only seen T60's in 1/2 drive. T55's come in either 3/8" or 1/2" drive.

Nothing in motorcycles/atvs that use anything bigger than 50

incorrect - brakes on the early 2000's triumph trophy's used t55 for brakes. guessing other models used it as well since they used a pretty small selection of calipers in that era.
