I have been causally looking for a Hex bit and torx set. I came cross this Gearwrench 84 piece set. I like that it comes in a case which makes it good for me to take on the road. I like that it has the long ball end hex bits. I have only used the E torx a few times (on Chrysler struts) so they are not all that important but more of a bonus.
I can't seem to find the exact sizes it includes.
Just want to make sure it does not skip the T27 as I use that a lot on chain saws and leaf blowers. If anyone knows please post.

I am interested in overall Thoughts?

That's a pretty comprehensive set. It isn't the best and isn't USA made if that matters to you, but it covers a wide range of things.

I'd say for the money you will be pleased. Warranty would be good too in case you break one.

That set should include T27. The separate Torx & Tamper sets they sell are 13pc (T7-T60), while that set is 12pc (T8-T60) so all it skips is the T7.

I've been using my GW Tamper Torx and E-Torx (damn you GM!) sockets professionally for a couple years now, no complaints.

Amazon Q&A shows:
Set includes:
E4 - E24 E-Torx (13 pieces)
T-8 - T-50 Long Torx (10 pieces)
T-8 - T-60 Standard (12 pieces)
Tamper Proof Torx T-8 - T-60 (12 pieces)
1/8 - 3/4 Standard (15 pieces)
2.5mm - 19mm Standard (15 pieces)
4mm - 10mm Long Ball Hex (7 pieces)
Bit Sockets are 2-piece design
Professional Full Polish Chrome (except E-Torx black oxide)

I have the pre-Carlyle NAPA torx and hex bit sockets which are rebranded Gearwrench. I've abused the hell out of them and they've held up great. I also have USA and China Craftsman torx and hex sockets and they've been really good as well. Done everything from brake work, trim removal/installation and recently installed roof racks on my Durango.

I have both Gearwrench and VIM bit sockets. I've been happy with both. I prefer the VIM bits, but the Gearwrench have held up well. Biggest thing will be finding a set that works for your needs / price, as they all have slightly different size ranges and such.

The Vim MMS64 set is in my main tool cart, along with Gearwrench Long Torx & Long Ball Hex(MM/SAE) from Advance Auto. Also have a smaller Gearwrench Set in my moble kit.

Advance Auto has the smaller GW on sale for $40 at the moment. Part# 40424A.

All my hex and torx bit sockets are Mac but I have checked out these gearwrench sets. They are an excellent value for what is included as they seem to be some of the most comprehensive sets out there.

At some point I saved this pic another GJ'er posted when they bought that set. edb7e7790012ad477e10d4314c4428dc.jpg

Thanks guys for the feedback.....I am getting ready to pull the trigger. It will be nice to have a good quality and comprehensive set that is well organized in a hard case. This is right in my price range around $160.....NAPA has it on sale this month.

Just got this set yesterday and here is some initial feed back. I really like the set for how I will be using it. The only items it is lacking that would have been nice for me are SAE long Hex ball ends. Lots of ODPE out there using SAE fasteners. Although the new stuff is moving more towards metric. Anyone who works on Industrial Equipment would like having them. I am sure. If you are an auto tech no worries. You are well covered. The T7 is skipped but it is not common. I will post a picture with the list of what is included. A few sizes I am sure I will never use. i.e. 5/8 and 3/4 hex or a T60. But .....You never know.

The Blow molded case is solid and well made. The long bits snap into the top portion well. Not too tight and not too loose.

The metric sockets are distinguished from the SAE with a knurl while the SAE have a double line. The box says it has large hand stamped markings for easy identification. I find that true on the 3/8 and 1/2 drive but I have to stop and focus to read the 1/4 drive sizes. That is not a big deal. Maybe I need new glasses. They do have nice plated finishes and the overall visual quality looks good.

The larger long drives have S2 stamped on them. So I assume them are all made from S2 tool steel.

Finally, my only surprise was the COO being China. A bit disappointing as I thought GW was made in Tiwian. At this point in time I still think it is a good value. A year from now will be the best time for me to comment on that.

I'm surprised by the COO as well, everything I've picked up individually from GW so far has been Taiwan. Hopefully they found a manufacturer that keeps the quality to that standard.

For a really affordable set of long SAE ball end hex sockets, grab the Husky set at Home Depot. Made by Apex (that owns GW), made in Taiwan (last I checked) and like $20 for a set. I bought mine since the set was cheaper than a single USA made socket, and have been using them professionally for almost 2 years now. No breaks yet, and have reefed on them pretty hard.

Gearwrench has no rhyme or reason for where their tools are made. Initially most everything was made in Taiwan. Then they moved production of some non ratcheting tools to China, people's republic of. I know my recent Gearwrench purchases of their xp120 spline ratcheting wrenches were Taiwan made. The big box or Sears sold sale stuff seems to be all PRC made. It's a **** shoot as to where what you get from Gearwrench is made. :dunno:
