Hi,

I am looking for a Torx Plus tamper proof bit set.

Something similar to this:

Snap On doesn't sell anything, but i am wanting US or Euro made not Chinese. I am EU based so won't have access to all the options in the states.

Any suggestions ?

Also looking for a spline set too for VAG group stuff.

That set is tamper Torx, not actually Torx Plus, which has a different profile. Do you actually need "Torx Plus", because that's a pretty unique specialty bit?

Snap On does not even make bits. They buy from Zephyr. Apex is the other top shelf US maker of bits, but you're in the EU and have plenty of good (some would argue better) options. Heck, lots of folks on this side of the pond order from your side.

Torx Plus tamper resistant still seems to be a bit new, but Wera offer them. Made in Czech Republic. I haven’t used these exact bits, but the regular Torx seem o.k.

As rlitman alluded above, Torx PLUS tamper resistant is a different profile from torx plus - it has 5 splines rather than 6.

As a general note, I’m finding the quality of Snap On bits quite poor at the moment. The last bit driver I bought came with 5 bits, one had a bent tip, one a massive burr, and one was cracked right through.

I don’t think Zephyr have supplied Snap On bits for some years. I have some of the old Zephyr supplied bits (with the ‘Z’ code) and they are superb.

In the U.K. you are generally better off buying PB Swiss. Better bits and less money than Snap On, but even they don’t offer Torx Plus Tamperproof.E2604B0F-4E49-45C1-B584-C56DECFA1120.jpeg

VIM Tools, excellent stuff and they have all the different styles of bits. Made in Taiwan but they are rebranded for Matco/Mac/Cornwell here in the US.

There is that too. My understanding is that the Plus was a line added to put new patent restrictions on the fasteners to keep a lock on the market, where Torx uses a parabolic groove and Torx Plus has an elliptical geometry to supposedly reduce camout. And yes, the 5 spline fasteners were piggybacked on this patent to originally be used for license protected security hardware.

The problem here is that the license requirements for Tamper Torx-Plus restrict sales of the bits to the public, so if you actually need a 5-spline Tamper Torx-Plus bit you may need to turn to some crappy knockoff that has no IP entanglements (i.e. Chinese).

I'm not sure if things are different here, the pic below is what i am familiar with.

I need bits so that i can remove screws etc the same as the far right type fastener, which is what i would call torx plus tamper proof, 5 point not 6.

I think you are exactly right!

I seem to remember reading something about increased torque in some specific metal, but I seem to remember thinking it was bull at the time!

I didn’t realise the intention was to restrict the availability. That seems to be bull as well, as my local hardware shop sells security bit sets (Taiwanese I admit) that include these.

Maybe it’s a sales ploy - I don’t think I’ve seen (m)any of these in real life, but the British mentality is to stock up and hoard anything restricted!

Yep, that’s a Torx Plus Tamper Resistant!

Looks like Wera is your best bet, but some of the Taiwanese bits are not bad.

They do sell them.
The 11 pc set (8-55) is part number 211EFTXRTPY.
(The insert bits are also sold separately from the sockets, if needed.)

I knew they sold that set, but they don't do a bit set. I've never ever seen anything big with Torx Plus Tamper so seemed a bit pointless getting the set when I'll probably never use the bigger ones. Might just price the smaller ones though given the lack of availability of non Chinese stuff

I have a set by VIM, five points, axial hole at the bit end. I bought them online years ago so they are available to the public. Or were. I assume this is what you need, but maybe there's something new that's similar? The only thing I don't like about the VIM set I have is that they are all 3/8 drive, even the tiny sizes. This style bit is also in their master bit set that comes in a case- bits only, no sockets.
