I haven't encountered any GearWrench torx bit sockets made in China. They all appear to be Made in Taiwan under these model numbers:

80723
80725

Not saying they don't exist.

I do own the tamper set and now I can tell the bits are all S2. If you want to learn how easy it is to tell the difference between S2 & Cr-V bits in your hand, head down to Lowes and compare their Taiwan individual bit sockets to their Chinese sets.

That being said, personally, I'd rather skip the whole APEX controversy and go with Vim.

They are fantastic to deal with directly. In the rare event you break something, you'll get a replacement in a couple days no questions asked. Even asked them about impact use. They said, "yep, covered". I don't know anyone else who says or does that besides Snap-On trucks.

when I work on cars I want my torx to be great quality. Nothing worse than rounding a gd torx. I got some older good quality Craftsman/ Husky pre HD / snap on sockets that work great.

If you aren't going to use them hard, most any set will be fine.

If you are going to use them hard, you will break them regardless of who makes/sells them.

I have a hf set either at home, or in the back of my truck, or somewhere anyway that I've never broken one, but I may have used them twice.

At work we have several brands snap on, gearwrench, and a variety of others.

The snap on are expensive but can warranty once a week, the gearwrench were fairly cheap and Advance will send a new one along with one of our orders, something like 3-5 times a day average.

So I use the gearwrench set and put the snap on set in the drawer.

Edit: the other 'sets' aren't really sets anymore because the more used ones get broken and never replaced.

So I've done some research over the past few days.

The Gearwrench 80742 was on my wishlist as I'm a Gearwrench snob, but the COO and no lifetime warranty bugged me.

Kept trying to find a suitable VIM comparable and I think the VIM MMS64 is the way to go. It's everything the 80742 is minus the long torx bits (don't need em anyway) and it's impact rated, lifetime warranty, and Taiwan COO.

Guys, I love (LOVE) Gearwrench, but I'd go with the VIM MMS64 on this one. It's just a better package deal for a comparable price.

Check your local Tractor Supply, they have been clearancing out their house brand 3/8" impact Torx bit sets for $10. Not sure how well they will hold up, but cheap enough to buy a couple sets....plus, they are a little longer than standard torx bits.

Oh, agree on the MMS64, hands down. I own the master torx set tms34pf and really had to talk myself down from the 64 b/c I already have the hex I need.
