Torx vs Tamper Proof Torx?

Anybody have any issues with using tamper proof as a main set? I could see possible cracking issues with a hole in the center, but is it negligible? AAP has a 13pc set of tamper proof's for $2 than a 10pc regular torx.

Kind of solved my on question. The 10pc kit offers bigger sizes than the 13pc. The 13pc set has sizes that I use in precision screwdrivers.

Nah, you're good. Never ran into a "tamper proof torx" fastener. What manufacturer uses those? Chrysler maybe?!?

I know that non tamper proof would have to be stronger, but to be honest I don't think it's a huge difference. I think the place where torx needs the strength is on the "star points", so the loss of metal from the small center hole doesn't seem to effect it too badly.

BTW. I often strike tamper proof torx on computer and electronics stuff. Definitely worth having a set.

They are a bit weaker. But u will mostly use them for interior work or usually at the mass air flow sensors

I have noticed an increase with using security / tamper proof torx fittings, mainly bolt sizes M6 to M10, a lot of new cycles have them, and a lot more on European cars, from seat belt fixings to alarm brackets, even the management modules, they have seem to be making an appearance anywhere, at least its a good excuse to buy more tools,

Anything the manufacturers don't want the average Joe screwing with. As someone else posted, they are very common on security system parts & air bag components. What I've never run into is 5 point security Torx screws but when I had my MAC guy order me a set a couple years ago those came in accidently and I had to exchange them for normal 6 point bits. Anyone in the automotive trade ever run into a 5 point Torx screw ? I would have kept them being the tool junkie that I am except I have NEVER needed one so I sent them back. How about security type Allen screws ? I bought a cheap Harbor Freight bit set awhile back because I needed the clutch head bits to work on my 56 Chevy truck and it came with an assortment of Allen bits with holes in them. :dunno:

We use the 5 lobe tamer torx bits on Stanadyne DE10 (and DB4 applications) diesel inj pumps. Sorry for the large picture......I "borrowed" it from google images and don't know how to make it smaller.

The screws holding down mass air flow sensors on the newer GM 3800s are a tamper proof T20.Some appliances require the tamperproof torx bits. Some electronics too.

Most the time tamper proof and regular torx bolts don't require a lot of tourqe anyway so if you just have the tamper proof your going to be fine.

Tamper proof are weaker though if you in counter a corroded torx the tamper proof might twist and brake a lot easier. This happened to me on a Ford focus coil pack bolt. If I would have had a regulate torx head in this situation I am positive it would have broke that too though.

If it's going to break a tamper proof it's probably going to brake a regular torx.
