While I was building the front winch bumper for the new to me truck I had to remove the tow hooks to make room for the bumper mount, I wanted the tow hooks so here is a video of what I did to make them work.

Tow hook mod.

The complete bumper build is also now up on my channel linked in my sig.

I really like your bumper, I wish that I had the skills to make one.

Not laughing at you but as far as skills go I am way down the totem pole. It is having the right equipment and the will to try that makes the difference.

To build a standard bumper (No winch) all you need is a way to cut steel, even a cut off wheel on a grinder and a little 120 welder, flux core is fine.

I built my first bumper 30+ years ago with a jigsaw and a oxy/ace torch set from HF. I was 16 years old.

BTW it was fugly!

Nice looking bumper! IMO I would weld some Clevis mounts with aftermarket tow hooks on your bumper. It will be stronger and more reliable. I have seen many of the cast OEM hooks snap under a hard load witch is usually when you need them the most.

I am adding clevis mounts to it, I have seen the factory ones fail as well but since this isn't an off-road truck the most these will ever have to do is pull someone out of a snow bank.

Cool looking bumper, and saying that it looks stout would be an understatement! good video, although I might have missed some of the words while staring at the gerstner!

It cleaned up very well, just a bit of Murphy's oil soap and a bit of love.

We did have to give it a few whacks to tighten up the finger joints but now it works perfectly.

Love the 6 drawer mini Craftsman box in the background! Great job at making the hooks work.

I enjoyed the video.

Isn't there a GJ rule against wearing a Wright tool t shirt while using a craftsman ratchet??:)

i'd like to see the fairlead recessed into a pocket in the front of the winch tray, only leaving maybe 1/4 of the rollers outside the bumper face. first time you come down off something onto that lead it'll be useless.

nice overall design.

In had that concern as well, but this is a DD and work truck not an off roader, The only real reason it is getting a winch at all is that I had it sitting on the shelf.

At first, you mentioned that you were going to put a second vertical support on that main plate that goes to the part of the frame above the plate. Were you going to originally have two vertical mounting points and decided to delete one or did you just decide to use the other vertical mounting point (below the main plate) instead?

In the end I decided that it didn't need the third mounting point, and it would have been a ***** getting fasteners in with the way the bumper is constructed.

I knew someone would catch that
