Anybody ever sewn their own straps, I would like to make a few custom size straps for use around the shop. I am not sure what "thread" to use, any help?
Sounds pretty dangerous if you ask me. Depending on the use, are you willing to trust your life to your sewing skills? I'd stick to commercially available straps or talk to the manufacturers and see if they have a good source for custom sizes available.
You could probably (I've seen it done before, on a tow strap, but not to tow with) sew it up, and then burn 2 holes where they are sewed at so you can put bolts and big washers. Don't know if that's a good idea or not though.
These will be for used for just lightweight securing of stuff around the shop, no lifting or pulling, just want them to be certain lengths with a "D" ring to hook to the wall. Could use chain, but don't want any damage from it. I just talked to a local here who makes straps, he said to use a high tenacity yarn, which can be bought at several outlets. He also uses the same 1955 Singer machine I have.
