I am not a mechanic/tech. 87 toyota truck, 4 cylinder, non terbo, fuel injection. 22re motor. It will start, run fine for about 15 seconds and stop. Then wouldn't srart for awhile, then later it will. I was hoping somebody that has worked on these back in the day could give me there thoughts on this. I've done the simple stuff. Your help will be appreciated.

When it won't start, will it start with a puff of starting fluid ?

If so, then perhaps, if you haven't thus far, try changing the fuel filter. Have you looked

in the carb for obvious malfunctions, like stuck float, or float valve crudded shut ?

Doesn't have a carb. It has a new fuel pump, and filter.

I assume its turning over after it dies? Need some more information here. Fuel pressure gauge on it while trying along with spark checker.

concur - definitely need a fuel pressure gauge since it sounds like some fuel gets to the rail, but the 15 seconds of running depletes it and the pump, for some reason, can't keep up. could be blockage in a fuel line or the pickup (old truck - could be lots of trash in the tank), bad pump, bad filter...

when it dies, does it die 'evenly' - do all the cylinders peter out or does it seem like one or two drag the others down?

Fuel gauge and spark checker are a good idea even though I doubt its spark related. But its possible. Dunno exactly what setup you got but if it has a idle air control which I would think it should being fuel injected thats another possibility .

A couple friends of mine have had trouble with carbon buildup in the throttle body, I also recall one of them had a vacuum leak one day that would cause the truck to run and idle like ****. I would check fuel pressure and your spark first, then move on to the less simple stuff.

Use your Special Service Tool (paperclip) to jump FP and B+ inside the diagnostic connector. With keyon, engineoff you should be able to hear the fuel pump running. If you can't hear the pump, a bad pump is a likely diagnosis. If you can hear the pump, and it will start and run, you have a problem in the VAFM-COR circuit (which shuts off the pump when the computer doesn't sense airflow through the VAFM). If you can hear the pump, but it won't start, you need to check for fuel pressure (bad pump, clogged fuel filter, etc.)

Sometimes the pumps will quit once they warm up.

yES, IT turns over after it dies. It has a new pump and filter, Its been runing for 5k since I drained and cleaned the tank when I first got it. Idle air sensor was my guess too, Its quite exspensive, hate to guess on it

Yes it turns over after it dies. It has a strong fuel flow at the pump. It dies evenly, but when I try to start it some seem to fire and some don't.
