I would like to build a sliding ladder to access loft storage in my workshop. Looking for recommendations for a supplier of hardware or complete system

You can buy the wheels and ladder hardware from Rockler and then build the ladder yourself. The entire ladder kit with all parts is very expensive for some reason.

If you are handy you can make a kit from various online sources.

I like the idea of that, but I use one of these and I love it:

Just thought I'd throw that out there. It's not going to make you feel like Cornelius Vanderbilt but I didn't have to make it.

Personally I like Firebirds Idea better. With the Library ladder the path it rolls on needs to be clear, where the rolling steps can go around objects and only needs a clear space where it is going to be set up.

Firebirds idea also gives you a staircase that you can roll to other walls for other tasks, lightbulb changes, hanging things up, and others.

Back to ford33's comment---Anyone know why the apparently pretty straight-forward parts for a library stairs are so expensive.

Thanks for all the response. I’m leaning toward the rolling stairs idea as it’s cheaper and safer.

Rolling stairs are made so you stay at the top. Look at the handrail. If you got something with enough steps (probably 8), not only will the floor footprint be huge (picture the size of the ones they have at Home Depot), but you'll trip over the railing trying to step off the top into the loft. They're not made like the ones you see at an airport. ;)

I built a "library" ladder using cast aluminum steps I got from Rockler, but from my own bespoke plans. It was expensive, but not as ungodly expensive as the complete kit, and I was then able to build it using 5/4 sides instead of 3/4.

You can build your own ladder, but there's a lot of work involved. With wooden treads, each step needs to be dadod into the rails at the proper angle, and each wooden tread needs a steel tension rod to keep the rails from separating. By buying metal treads, I cut out a lot of work, and it came out beautiful.

I was completely set on making the rolling ladder for my shop, but then I took an honest look at it and realized there will always be something in the way of it rolling. Along my walls are various tools like drill press, hydraulic press, sandblast cabinet, powdercoat oven, a half dozen engines on stands and other stuff that isn't likely to go away anytime soon.
