"Trail mower" for UTV from brush hog?

Anybody ever taken a typical brush hog and converted it to a "trail mower". I'm using trail mower because thats what I've seen the internet calling it. Basically a small trailer that you pull behind a UTV/ATV to mow with.

I've recently come across the need for something like this. My stubborn dad who just had open heart surgery cant run the tractor because it beats him up too much (and the stubborn part is he doesn't want anyone else mowing the pasture). My thought though is if I could come up with something he could hook his Ranger up to would be much smoother riding.

My current concern is most tractor PTO's run 540-1000 rpms depending on tractor speed. My 20 HP Briggs that I would try to run this with is running 3500 rpms. Will the gear box on a brush hog hold up to the elevated input rpms without running a complicated pulley set up to slow it down? I ask this because originally I was just going to find an old rusted out mower deck and use its spindles and pulleys to build a new deck and power it with the old motor i have laying around. I recently stumbled on a older brush hog though priced very very well so it got the wheels turning.

Buying a new one is NOT an option as from what I've seen they're ridiculously priced for what they are. For anyone curious to what I'm talking about I'll add a picture so you get the idea of what I'm going for.

The rpm of the Briggs will be too much for the brush hog. You might could do a hydraulic setup, pump on the Briggs and motor on the gearbox then you could get the input rpm your after.

RPM would be very dangerous. A brush hog would require so much work in the form of a gearbox and adjustable casters that you would learn why the commercial trail behind mowers are so expensive.

If your dad is currently using a 3pt mower, you might be able to go to a pull type mower and maybe one a little larger so he could slow down to make the ride easier. The weight on the back from a 3pt power can tend to make a tractor bounce.

I switched from a 9ft mounted mower to a 15ft batwing and have found things to be less jarring.

running a brush hog at 3500 rpm would be ridiculously unsafe. Trail mowers are already dangerous to begin with, slinging a blade at that RPM would be Darwin award material. You could get away with it if your bearings where all good and the blades where perfectly balance. However, as soon as you hit a rock or a branch you would be SOL.

If you do build one, make sure the weight is low and balance, and you have a good remote kill switch.

I know this does not answer your question. But if moneys tight might a junk riding mower deck be easier as it is closer to the speed of your briggs. In this part of the world a 48" blown mower is 200$.
Just a thought....

Instead of a Bush hog what about a finish mower. You would still need to convert the power source but it already has wheels on four corners and the blades are belt driven.
I had an old one that I was going to take the gearbox off and put a large twin cyl. gas motor on it the blades are belt driven so converting it would be easier. My plan was to pull it with my 4 wheeler. Someone offered me more for it than I had in it so I sold it and never got to convert it.a9aab71a5dc07f9faa6679649d1a2d4c.jpg

How big of bush hog? My 8 footer takes all of 45hp pto tractor (53hp engine). And can not lift it 3 point even with a loader on so I just use it two point. I was the heaviest one bush hog made at the time. Then there are chincy 4’ that could be run but you are going to have to use a reduction belt drive. The Amish around here have horse drawn carts with a motor (24hp Briggs typically) and a 3 point hitch to pull tractor implements. They normally don’t use a bush hog due to the possibility of rock being thrown at the horse ankles but run sickle bars a lot and a 8-10hp motor would run one of those easily. I remember a large belt reduction but there may have been a second reduction as well.

I'm just too cheap to spend that much on a ready built implement.

That was my original idea until i came across the very cheap brush hog. I know spinning the brush hog at 3500 rpms wouldn't be wise. I may have lucked out and found one semi local priced pretty good that "starts for a few seconds and dies". I may just luck out and buy a $20 carb and slap on it. I'm going to go check it out. I typically don't get lucky but for $300 for a 60" pull behind it isn't worth all my time to build it!

Not only unwise, but Darwin Award stupid. The gearboxes on brush hogs are not rated for that kind of rpm. They are rated for 540 not 3500 rpm.

BTW....at 3500 rpm, the blade tips will be in the transonic region and any failure will most likely not be contained within the deck.
