I have had this car trailer since about 2014 and it is probably the most neglected tool I have. Its a 2012 H&H 10K tilt bed trailer. The paint started going on the fenders almost immediately. I kind of said I would repaint them and never got around to it. It also did not have good tie downs for cars. The stake sides never were good for hooking straps to. Also using a come along to pull dead cars up was getting old. So the list of upgrades
-12K Winch mounted in tool box
-Cut stake sides off and weld on D-rings
-Replace rotted fenders
-Add spare tire mount
-Remove boards, trailer lights, and wiring
-Send out for sand blasting and new paint
-Reassemble and service brakes and wheel bearings

You know they make slide in d rings for stake pockets ? Why cut them off when you could use them in the future for side boards.

I did know that. I have no intentions of using this like a utility trailer. Once this is done I am actually looking to build a tilt bed single axle utility trailer for yard work. This trailers function is to haul my race car and main job of picking up broken down vehicle. Occasionally hauling material from Menards or Discount Steel.

Dirty project!

I have the electric over hydraulic version of that with the factory boxes and removable fenders.

The bulkhead welds are ugly and the fenders are rusting. I think they didn't prep them from the stamping oil. Same issues you mentioned, but they are great trailers though. Mine is kind of the Cadillac with the options, it gets gawkers everywhere.

I like my stake pockets though! I was brought up in heavy truck so I actually prefer them, I buy all my straps with chain leaders.

I wish it was painted though, their powder coat is not too nice.

Very nice work thus far! Does the winch have its own set of batteries inside the box or does it run off the tow vehicle batteries? If you could put a little "drip cap" flashing over the fairlead rollers (mounted on the outside of the box?) I think it would help them live a longer life.

Batteries will be in the tool box with a trickle charger plus wired so the truck will also charge. Good idea on the drop cap.

Nice. I refurbed my car trailer about 5 years ago. I ran all the wiring in Liquid Tight conduit and kept all the grounds inside junction boxes. Used all stainless hardware and it seems to be doing well. Something to consider...it didn't cost much.

I do like that. As I pulled all the wiring and there crappy sheathing out I was wondering what I was going to replace it with.

Kind of looking at doing the hydraulic conversion....

Just thought I would offer that information. My open car trailer does double duty for me and now does more utility work now that I have an enclosed trailer. I do have to admit...

Holy cow, nobody is going to accuse you of standing around wasting time.

Totally appreciate the input. Big fan of your shop project. After this project is done finally get to start turning wrenches on my drag car.

Started working on the tool box. I used angle for the front support and 1/4 channel for the winch mount.

I also ordered a dual pump and ram from Premium Supply to do a hydraulic conversion. I should be able to get the winch, pump, and battery in the tool box. Just need to figure out a box for straps now. Trying to get everything I need to tow a car mounted to the trailer so I just have to hook up and go.

Thanks. I also put a junction block inside a weatherproof box. The seal on it isn't doing so well after 5 years, but I really never go in there.

I got it at WalMart. It's a large watertight box by Outdoor Products. I got a clear one and spray painted the inside black. After sitting in the sun for 5 years, the seal turned kind of gummy/sticky - it seals well, but is hard to open. There may be better options out there. I'd look at a boating or sporting goods store.

Several years back, I added a clearance light to the front of my fenders. It helped me judge where the wheels were actually at in some tight backing spaces or getting in areas with road construction.

Then I bent up a piece of flat bar in an L-shape over the light so I wouldn't knock it off as that always seemed to be a stepping point for me to get on/off the trailer.

It appears the bottom of the fender back is completely welded at the bottom and stitch welded at the top, that correct ? Any welding inside the fender ?

H&H like the OP has ( I have one too ) came from the factory with all slim line LED. They put one in the outrigger/step in front of the fender for exactly this reason. You have to look real hard for the hole, it there but only about 3/4". I like that they did that.

It does have some clearance lights that are flush led's from the factory. It wouldn't hurt to have something on the fender also though.
The original fenders were just welded in a few spots leaving the bottom of the fender un welded. Probably thinking any moisture from the top could drain out. I over did it and the fenders are completely welded. Top, bottom, back to fender. COMPLETELY WELDED. Not sure if that was a good idea but we will see.

My trailer isn't an H&H and is about 15 years old, it had the basic lights needed. My step-dad has an H&H single axle utility trailer, older like mine and all it has is basic lights too.

LEDs are a great invention and a smart upgrade for trailers of all sizes. Even better if they are flush mount as to not get them knocked off.

Keep us updated on those fenders, mine needs them as well. . . . and paint too.

How do you plan on powering the winch? Leaving a battery in the tool box?

Big delay and not allot done. My wife went into labor on Wed and gave birth to our third child. So a little busy not sleeping. But some parts showed up.

Ram for tilt.
