Trailer TPMS

I run my trailer over some rough rocky terrain and have experienced a few flats. In an effort to try and catch a flat before any tire damage is done I am looking at aftermarket TPMS systems. Does anyone have a positive or negative experience with these types of systems? Thank you for the help.

I have looked into them before and bought one a few years ago and was unsatisfied with it. One of the features it supposedly offered was temperature monitoring in addition to pressure which is where I first noticed discrepancies. A couple of times there were gross discrepancies in the tire temperatures before I started the trip. That led me to double check the pressure readings and I found them to not be reliable either. I ended up **** canning the system and haven't gone back for another try.

This is the unit that I had:

I generally loathe TPMS, or at least the way mandatory TPMS is implemented in cars, but this is not a bad idea at all. It's too easy to miss a low tire on a trailer until it's too late.

A few years ago I installed an external TPMS on my vehicles tires (2008 Tacoma) to pin point the exact tire(s) that needed air, etc. because of my vehicles old factory TPMS system with the dreaded symbol.

Which is helpful to some extent though not very accurate or specific on which tire(s) to check that's causing this light to come on my dashboard.

Though I have been very happy and pleased with my current external TPMS set up, no complaints. Even installed one of these on my daughters Tacoma as well.

You can read about it here.....(my initial post starts at #4)

I have one of these systems on my trailer and have been happy with it. I didn't need to monitor 6 tires in my case, but wanted to have extra sensors on hand.

I've had some cheapie systems in the past. IMO spending a few more bucks is worth it.

Your opinion, your decision.

As a Tire Service Manager in a former life, the TPMS is the single most cost-effective safety improvement ever. Without it, the proles never check tire pressure and then load past max GVW, all the family on board and head down the interstate at 80 MPH on a 100-degree day. That they kill themselves is natural selection, but too often they cause considerable collateral damage.

I have no experience with them but they seem like an excellent idea. I'm eager to see what other peoples experience is.
after ruining 4 tires in 3 years I bought a system for my car.
It works very well, showed me I needed to dismount and clean my rim myself,
that took care of the problem ( 3 different tire places did not fix ).
Its very small, difficult to read in sunlight but its not an issue as it has an annoying beep when a tire falls below 30 psi and it indicates the offending wheel. $53.
I've checked it with my gauge, its quite accurate.
