Train Track Rail

I have bought a little over a 100' of track from a guy that does rail salvage. It's smaller track about 4" tall. I have been cutting it into 12"-18" pieces and selling as anvils, train enthusiast decor etc. What else could I use it for and turn it into? Looking for ideas, yard art, weld it together? Just trying to come up with new ideas. It is in 8' lengths right now. Thanks

Old school Metal shaping/panel beating/autobody guys find them handy for dollys if you have some that have been sliced about one inch thick or so.

Cut two slices that are 1/2” thick
Tack weld together at 90 degrees and you have bookends

I don't recommend using the embedded rails as a welding ground. I learned that in a shop where this was done they found the welding current conducted through the Track Roller Bearings caused pitting and led to premature failures of the Track Rollers.

Likely those rails will be very heavy.

Overhead crane rail is lightweight stuff. As for cutting it in half, that is no problem with a wet cut off saw.

Rail comes in different weight rating depending on it's intended purpose. Jointed rail for example weighs less than ribbon rail. Most rail used in yards weighs less than something that runs on a heavily trafficked mainline. The lighter weights are also used on smaller railroads at lower speeds that don't see the abuse of heavy trains running btw 50 and 60MPH.

That stuff is tough x 10 , tough to torch cut with a normal size tip

My grandfather recieved a pair of bookends made of rail and spikes as a gift from the railroad he retired from. They work really well!

Edging for your gravel driveway right outside your shop for about 20 feet, door stop, small benchtop anvil for light work, bury an end in the ground vertical for beating on stuff, legs for a welding table, small sections for stopping a project vehicle from rolling, etc...

Educate me about the legalities of dealing in rail road equipment.

If some fool stole track from an active line it could be a real mess and I thought it was a crime to possess track for that reason.
