On mine it turned out to be an oxidized thermocouple. Caused occasional failure to ignite. It was an easy fix with emery cloth and only took a few minutes. Fortunately I never needed to call service.

I live in a newer development and there are about 500 Trane heat/AC systems here to date and very few problems, so I think they build quality systems, but eventually all mechanical systems need service. We're fortunate to have many responsive service providers in my area.

That isn't Trane's fault. Find a better shop. You can also look ath the control board to read the trouble code LED.

Here's a You Tube video on Trane codes that may help.

Two flashes mean flame failure. Could be several reasons, but the easiest one to check is the one I cited re the flame sensor.

I just put a new flame sensor on a couple days ago.

Does the induced fan motor run ?
Is your ignitor a spark OR glowing type ?
You should see spark arc OR
a glowing.

Shut switch off on furnace and turn it back on.
Then see what it does/what code it gives you.

It just misfired so I turned the power switch off @ the furnace.Turned it back on it flashed continuous call for heat.Fired up & is heating now.

On some gas burners, the glowing ignitor also is used to sense if the flame has lit. There may be a hairline crack in the ignitor which makes it unable to sense the millivolts or microamps of current, so it shuts the burners down, thinking that the burners are not lighting up. (even though the ignitor is able to glow when 120v is put on it). You might not even be able to see the break in the ignitor. Try replacing the glowing ignitor.

UPDATE: The first service tech I called came today.Turned out to be the burners. They were corroded/rusty so the gas couldn't flow across the from one side to the other. Thanks for all the suggestions,I'll keep you posted if there's any problems

Flashing slow: Normal no call for heat
Flashing fast: Normal call for heat
Continuous on: Replace control
Continuous off: Check for power
2 flashes: System lockout (no flame) or reversed polarity
3 flashes: Pressure switch problem
4 Flashes: Thermal (limit) protection off
5 Flashes: Flame sensed with gas valve off
Two flashes either the pilot isn't lighting or flame sensor is not seeing the flame. If the pilot lights remove flame sensor either use steel wool or sand paper to clean it reinstall and try it.

This sounds like the flame sensor, everything is working except the gas valve is not getting the signal that the unit lit. The sensor will be right beside the igniter, make sure it is not grounded by a small piece of carbon or that it just got bent and is touching the side. Clean it off with a 3M scrubbing pad or even a dollar bill, don't be too aggressive with it.

^^^^^^^^^If the flame does not move down the burners because of the rust......the flame front does not constantly reach the flame sensor. The rust causes a rough or inconsistent start. Removing the burners and cleaning will fix it but symptoms will come back because the anti rust coating on the burner is gone.

If I see rusty burners I check the heat exchanger for corrosion and leaks. That's not something to mess around with. My experience has been that more often than not, if the burners are rusty enough to cause flame spread problems, it's time for a new furnace.

Well said. In my second house, this condition caused the furnace to get red tagged by the home inspector just before we moved in. Fortunately it got fixed before we could occupy it. Possibilities of CO leakage are nothing to mess with.
