Transfer switch outlet wiring question

Guys, I'm getting my transfer switch wired up and I have a question. The directions that came with the kit say to connect the switch to the outlet (inlet?) with 10-3. Now correct me if I'm wrong, 10-3 is 3, 10 gauge conductors (hot, hot, neutral), right? Here's the question. The outlet it's self is grounded to the outlet box. Should I ground the outlet box to the transfer switch? I'd need another conductor of course. The directions say nothing about it so I'm guessing it's not needed, the ground wire.

I'm assuming 10/3 WG - if you have a 240VAC generator. So that's hot, hot, neutral, ground.

If the inlet box is metal and so is the transfer switch box then they both need to be grounded via the equipment ground wire of the 10-3 NM cable that runs between the boxes. The ground of 10-3 NM is not listed in the conductor count so the cable actually has 4 wires.

There are 3 insulated conductors, and there should be a bare ground in that cable.
Use that ground wire to ground the box and outlet.

It's HOT-HOT-NEUTRAL. No negative in AC.

Ah. So it will have four conductors. Ok, that makes more sense. I love this forum. Always someone who knows more about a given subject and is willing to help.

Now here's something you should know about wiring. *CABLE* does not count the ground as a conductor, so the cable you need is 10/3 "with ground" (not that you can buy it without today.) *CORD* does count the ground as a conductor, so you probably need something like a 10/4 SO cord for the connection between generator and inlet (assuming it's a portable, cord-connected unit.)

I know, makes no damn sense, but that's the way it is.
