What do I have here? This transformer came attached to a Delta tool grinder I just picked up. The tool grinder is 110V 1 phase. I assume this was used to step down 220V 3 phase power to run the grinder. Is that correct?

You've got a pretty beat up single phase step down xformer.

Zooming in on the computer it looks like it was hooked up for 480-120.

I did not realize that there was 480v 1 phase.

So, would I have any use for this in my shop? I only have 220v 1 phase.

There is, simply one leg of a 480 three phase supply. I doubt the transformer is needed if you have access to 120 volts with the capacity to supply the needed motor current.

Your transformer would generally be used as a control transformer on three phase machines. Control voltage is now 24 VAC usually but in the past "low voltage" control systems were 110~120 VAC. The transformer would provide the low voltage without the need for single phase low voltage wiring to the machine.

I have several 1 KVA transformers like yours, for me they are very handy.

That's what I thought. And this is only a step down transformer? I could not use it to step 220 up to 480? You know in case I found a 480v machine that I absolutely had to have..

Since your in the USA you have 240 volts not 220, it's more complicated then that when one has a 480V machine and only 240 volt single phase power, a transformer only steps up or steps down the voltage, it does not change from single phase to 3 phase, and does not change the frequency either.

It's worth about $50 on Fleabay.

In the scope of control transformers, it's kinda small. You will only get about 8.3A out of it (120Vac)
