I picked up this jack as well - I haven't cut it down yet as I want to put the lift back up and take some measurements before I take an angle grinder to it:

I've been deep into my car project for the last 6 weeks. sorry guys.

I cut the end of the square post off where the bottle jack mounts. The cut is where I'm pointing. Basically just making the post only 2-3 inches tall.

I then drilled three new holes into the short section of the post i cut off and bolted on the legs. the flange the bottle jack bolts to now rides on the legs for support.

It's around 34.25" to the plate a transmission sits on. This is not counting the brackets to keep the transmission from falling off the jack.

how often do you work on Transmissions?

how high do you lift the vehicle to take transmissions out?

what is the usual weight of the transmission you are working on?

whenever i wear it out or break it? LOL
a T56 is around 125lbs.

I also removed the entire rear subframe, rear end, suspension, brakes, etc with it at once. it works great. it has adjustments to tilt left to right and forward and backards.

Makes total sense now. So once you chopped that down, what is the lifting range now? It is hard to tell from your picture but even chopped down it looks like it barely clears the underside of the car with the ****** on the ****** lift. I see you used the 3" lift adapters are well. Would it clear without those?

Thanks!

Steve

I'll have to measure the actual lifting range, but at it's lowest it's now 34.25".
Northern tool's site says it's range is around 19 inches so probably somewhere just over 53" fully extended.

it is SLOW to raise. i will say that.. i'd guess 1cm per pump.. i'll probably fab up some sort of foot pedal to make my life easier. That said, it's hard to complain for the price.

I removed the 3" spacers a couple days before re-installing the transmission and no clearance issues with my car.

A couple more thoughts:

1) the legs with casters arent overly wide. I never used the jack before cutting it down, but i can see it not being as stable if not shortened and with a heavy load on it.. i've had no issues. just an observation.

2) the flange that the bottle jack mounts to was not welded on very square on my jack. In other words the bottle jack was tilted a bit. I used a couple washers as shims under one side of the bottle jack to level it. This may only been an issue with my jack, but thought i'd mention it.

3) I'm not sure how i lived without a transmission jack for so long.

Thanks for the better pictures - looking at your first pic and assembling mine - it all makes sense now.

If you do make some kind of foot pump - please update this thread.

I'm interested if there is any solution to this as well. I actually made one out of a long ram jack I had leftover from an old engine crane, and a transmission jack adapter from amazon. I think it'll work, however it's 5" too high for my car. Lowest height at the pad is 33". With a deep pan powerglide, it's 5" too high to fit under the car no matter which way I do it. I'm at 53" to the top of the bellhousing and need it to be around 47". I already have the pad adapters on the lift arms, helps, but not enough.

Its an old thread but this was useful to me so I am sharing. I got this Amazon transmission Jack recently for a subie project. Most of the transmission jacks available from amazon have a min height of 33 to about 36 inches which has everyone has noted is a bit high for the Maxjack. I noticed that the legs on this one could be flipped and reduce the min height by about 2.5". This worked for me on the Subaru. Once the transmission was removed I made some additional clearance by tilting the transmission bellhousing down and raising the tailstock.
