What are your recommendations for a low profile transmisssion jack? Don't have a lift. Car up on jack stands. Needs to be fairly cheap and have adjustable angles. Thanks Frank

Craigslist/Allofcraigs might be your friend. Trans jacks are on there frequently.

I bought a Carolina brand trans jack maybe 15 years ago at a local auto parts store. Paid about $200 as I recall. Good quality, and has removed and reinstalled a good handful+ of transmissions for me.

Then, there is the dreaded Horror Freight option: http://www.harborfreight.com/800-lb-capacity-transmission-jack-3185.html

That one looks like a very similar design to my Carolina, which might also be of Chinese origin, I am not sure.

I have one of those adapter plates that you can attach to a floor jack to make it a trans jack; I never used it. If you want it for cheap money, let me know.

Bottom line: you have options.

Grizzly has a 1200lb jack (#H8089) for about 180$ -200$ shipped. The one I have has done a couple of trans swaps so far with a couple more in the near future. There may be a coupon code available too.

I've used the HF 800 pound one and the HF 450 pound jack. The 800 pound is WELL worth the extra money over the cheap scissor HF trans jack. Spend the extra 60 bucks for the 800 pound jack if you are going the HF route.

I've used the 450 lb model with a whole jeep drivetrain without problems.

I've used the 450 lbs scissor style before and it works but I've also used the 800 lbs jack style and it's worth the extra 60 bucks. It's a lot more stable and the foot print is bigger so it rolls easier. Also the pump action is a lot nicer than trying to turn the screw jack to raise the scissor style without the jack moving all over. Point is the scissor style will get the job done, but for a few dollars more you can get the job done easier and safer. Some things are worth the few extra bucks in my opinion this is one of them.

Whatever you choose, make sure the car is high enough that the trans and jack can roll in and out together. Trying to lift the trans on and off the jack in the tunnel because you didn't lift the car high enough is gonna make for a bad day.
