Can anyone let me know what special tools are needed to go through a 4l60e for our chevy. Am not finding much info other than "special tools are needed"

You can line up the pump halfs without the special tool. Two big hose clamps put together do the same job.If it is the 1998 and up case, need a T50 torx plus bit for the bolts holding the bellhousing on.Heat the bolts up up with a torch carefully if these bolts don't come out.Can make the tool for the foward clutches out of scrap steel hanging around. If the 5 black springs are still in the forward drum, throw them away and most transmission repair shops will tell you this.

Here's some you'll probably need ( I'm more familer w/ Ford's, but these tools are kinda universal I think).

Factory service manual <buy this first and it will tell you exactly what you need

dail indicator
Possibily bushing driver's
pump alignment tool
Clutch spring compressor, K-D & OTC make them (I think the OTC is a better style myself)

The only real specialty tools I use besides assorted bushing drivers, snap ring pliers, sockets, screwdrivers, hammers and the like are TP 50 torx plus, universal clutch pack spring compressor, low and reverse clutch spring compressor, turbine shaft seal installer/sizer, stator seal installer/sizer, front pump allignment tool, some type of tool to check input shaft end play if you're not familiar with the trans and some other non-essential but nice to have tools like seal drivers and lip seal protectors.

I just rebuilt mine about year ago for the first time and the KD tool is a must in my opinion though you could probably come up with something to compress the springs, also the t50 torx plus if your 4l60e bell housing comes off, and a transmission line disconnect tool.

It sounds like this will be your 1st transmission rebuild I would strongly suggest buing the rebuild manual for the 4l60e and their is also a video you can buy that will show you a complete tear down, inspection and rebuild of the transmission. I got both and they were a big help. here are the links for the video and manual http://www.technicalvideos.com/index.phtml.

you can look on youtube and they have some videos of 4l60e rebuilds that way you can see what it is going to entail. I would go look at that first that way you can see if your up to it.

If you looking for a rebuild kit I would suggest this guy he mostly does 4l60's and he has a forum you can go to with a lot people that can answer your specific questions. He is even on the forum and will answer your question's. here's his link http://www.700r4l60e.com/. He was very helpful when I did my rebuild. Hope this helps. Good Luck
