This is a great site...I've been looking for something like this for a LONG time!

What do you guys that have an attached garage do with the trash cans? Those things take up a lot of room! What kind of ideas have you come up with to make them less intrusive? And putting them outside isn't an option.

Thanks.

I just put it in the corner. If you have cabinets, you could put one that slides in and out of a cabinet. You could make it so the front of the trash can looks like the front of the cabinet, so it's not so obvious.

You mean like your house garbage cans? For Garbage pickup? I dont think there is much you can do to really get these out of the way... they are a big stupid item that nobody wants around but you must keep them around.

If you're talking household trash cans, they live outside next to the house by the back gate. If you're talking about a garage only trash can, I have a 16-gallon gear oil can I got from my local Chevron distributor. The advantage of it is it's size. It's only about 14 inches wide and about three feet tall. Holds a lot of stuff, but doesn't take up much floor space. Almost any auto shop will give you one for free. Saves them having to get rid of them.

Unfortunately I'm talking about the 50 gallon or so cans that get rolled to the curb twice a week. Maybe I'll just see about finding a better spot than right in front of the wife's car...

Pics of my garage are coming soon....I'm in the process of moving some things around....

I have 2 of the 33-35 gallon size that have the wheels on them. I don't like them much in the garage either but putting them outside isn't a option for me as well. I have a 3 car garage with a 16ft door and a 8 ft door set back off the front about 2 ft. The best place I found is that area between the 2 doors near the overhead doors. The only problem with that is during the winter when I have to move them a little further away from the wall so I can park my snow thrower in the garage.

I have 2 big plastic ones also - in addition to the recycling containers.

It's one of those things... You really can't do much about it.

Main thing for me is - they are airtight - so no stench is hanging around.

I use the heavy duty contractor bags for trash - it gets so windy most days that the cans blow away after the garbage man tosses them.

While I agree these are a necessary evil (big stinky bastages in the garage taking up VALUABLE space) I disagree we should let it lie!!!! (Lie/lay, what ever.)

<---- ANTI trash can guy in a house that requires them be in the garage..... PLEASE post up alternatives!!

bumping this up, i have a large trash bin and recycling bin that have to be stored in my garage and I'm trying to recapture some of the floor space they take up. I was thinking of building some kind of enclosure so I can put things on top and still be able to pull the trash bin out

I keep ours outside, but near the side door of our house. That way they are easy to get to but don't take up space I'm paying a lot of money for each month.

Maybe you can put them outside also and make a garbage chute?

I live in a townhome, so I'm connected on both sides. The driveway is as wide as the garage, so no room to keep a trash bin. The only place could be the backyard, but then I'd have to wheel it around my place and my neighbors (200ft) which would be annoying twice a week.

If you can, put them outside, I'm building a little patio for mine in the 3' required setback from my garage. Outside will give the mice etc less reason to get into the garage too ;)

I built a small set of shelves to go over the trash cans. Recycling bin goes to the left of the trash cans. If I had been thinking, I would have made the shelves a few inches (maybe a foot) longer to accomodate the recycling bin underneath. The christmas tree and jack stands sit on the upper shelf. Miscellaneous tool cases and other stuff sits on the lower shelf.

Ours live by the side door to the house under the carport. Whenever I get around to closing the carport in, I am going to build a lean-to on the back of the structure to hold garden tools and the trash cans. They're fine outside if you get the kind that have a latch. Possums aren't that bright to be able to break in, but if you leave something for them to get to, they will.

Any idea how to keep the cans in place? I live in a large field and the wind really whips them around the yard. I've got the big rubbermaid cans and I've seen them get blown as far as 30-40 feet from where I left them!

I don't really want to put up a small fenced area for them. Is there anyway else to keep the can nicely in place outside my garage?

Find a way to permanently mount 20 or 30 pounds of weight (i'm thinking of the plate weights you see in a gym) in the bottom of each without ******* off the trash man.

I have a trash masher in the kitchen, trash goes in there, garbage goes in the disposer. One bag once a week on Thur. Thats it for me, no muss, no fuss, no stink.

Oh, man, you're killing me. I have to roll those big things 300 feet down the driveway every week. 20-30 pounds might kill the wheels! haha.

just sink a post in the ground right next to where you park the can, then use a bungee or even a rod attached to the upper handle on the can. I live in a high wind area also, and even 20lbs in the bottom won't always keep it from blowing over. Tether it up high, and it won't fall over.
The rear handle on my big rolling can has enough space that I just tip the can forward a little, then set it back against a hook I mounted on the gate post right next to the house...not in the way to lift the top, and just tip it forward a little to "unhook"...very easy even when fully loaded with heavy garbage.

I have 3 cans, the trash can is a faily smaller sized one compaired to the other two. Mine go outside along the side of the house which is gated off. I can walk right out of my garage door (not the main door where cars come in) and take the cans out the gate. Simple, maybe ya'll should put them behind your gates, or build a gate or parition to make them not so noticable. But in the garage? You got to boot them out!

Agree with keeping the cans outside if you have that option. Mine is just outside the side door on the slab on which the trailer sits. It's one of those big (75 gal?) types with wheels and an attached, hinged lid designed to be picked up / dumped by an attachment on the garbage truck. Heavy enough that it doesn't move when empty, but easily moved when full due to the wheels. Lid is such that animals do not bother it (or haven't yet figured how to open!).

I have one in the garage (normally under the bench) and one on the back deck (for bags from the house)

I got a pair of the 75 gallon ones, sit next to the garage outside. I have to roll them 120' to the street every Sunday night, or run them out early Monday morning. Occasionally I'll get a strong wind that whips around the corner that knocks them over if they're empty, but they don't go anywhere. We had 62 mph gusts pretty steady all afternoon Saturday, the sky was purplish orange from the dirt the front kicked up. I think the winds we get, they call them hurrycanes down south. Nobody typically goes outside unless the tornady whistles go off.

In my city we have the big roll out cans that a truck comes by once a week and dumps. I paid about 35 bucks and got a second one which I hardly ever fill which I keep out back of my shop. I dump everything into it and for safety reasons I dont keep a trash can in my shop.

We had that same front move through NW AR, sustained wind speeds were pretty high, but the gusts were near hurricane level!
