If you were traveling in a vintage American automobile, what would you consider a necessity in your tool box? Or maybe even a tool that turned out to be "boy I'm glad I had that with me."

Depends. If it's a Chevy, an assortment of BFHs. LOL

There shouldn't be that many sizes of fasteners. Just keep track of the sizes you use and carry sockets and combo wrenches in those sizes. Half dozen screwdrivers. A couple of pliers.

^LMAO^

Seriously though OP, what are your capabilities? What do you have in the car already? How far from civilization do you plan on traveling? Will the car be a year round daily driver?

This is probably the 2nd or 3rd thread in recent history on this subject. Basically the responses generally go from "cell phone and AAA" to:

3 ton floor Jack, 1/2" impacts and every socket size to do everything from changing tires to changing a head gasket, a 4 way, air compressor, breaker bar, cordless impact, 309 piece craftsman (USA only) tool kit, screwdiver set, Torx drivers, Hex drivers, combo wrenches, ratcheting wrenches (flex & 0 degree & offset), stubby wrenches, adjustable wrench, fencing pliers, bent nose needle nose pliers, long bent nose needle nose pliers, Channelocks, Knipex Cobra's (all sizes), Pliers wrench, wire strippers, multitool, OBD2 code reader, multi meter, cordless soldering iron, ice axe, snow shovel, ****** cable, 1,00ft of mountaineering rope, carabiners, chainsaw, handsaw, wd40, Kroil, a case of oil, duct tape, masking tape, tape measure, superglue, epoxy, energy bars, tent, fire starter, warm blankie, combat knife, headlamp, granola bars, a good book, portable DVD player, and a deck of cards.

I'm sure I left things out...

Yeah, pay for the auto club and bring a credit card.

If you get stuck odd hours, you can go to home depot or wal mart and get whatever you don't have, anyway. You just need the tow into nearest civiliaztion. But to properly fix anything you very often need spare parts and consumables. You can buy alot of tools for the cost of a 2 or 3 hour tow, better avoid that if at all possible.

Older cars that need tune ups, clean plugs, carb adjust ments and the like may be the one exceptio. Having tools to tinker around may be worth it if you are dealing with running rich/lean because your teveling to new places, and in part some of that hassle maybe unavoidable. Certain types of electrical/troubleshooting may also be in his category.

Also, check your brakes and fluids before you leave. Common sense and use your noggin. Dont have 8 year old brake fluid and 0.125 of pad...and eget stuck out with messed up rotors or a hydro leak, ect.

That long list, I don't always carry the chainsaw and camping gear, but most of the other stuff if I'm going more than an hour from home. And cordless impacts and ratchets, at least 3 lights. Really want a small nitrogen bottle with air hose setup too.

Just the basic small tool set and if theres any thing that stands out you may need to do simply stuff because if you have a big break down you will end up at a parts store any way. I read about a guy that was into old fords and it was impressive what he had with him. He is big into flathead V8s.

A cell phone and AAA. Seriously

That is what I carry for "everyday". Long trips, especially camping or to the rental cottage, I bring this along.

No code readers needed. Pre 1970 vehicles only. Considering a trip from Syracuse to Dearborn next year for a car show. I probably will pass on bringing the camping gear.

What sort of rig? Also what sort of talent level do you have? For an old enough car you should need carb adjustment tools, ignition adjustment tools, tire change tools, and some basic electronics tools.

With any modern car I always tell everyone to put the old serpentine belt in the trunk. You can have a mechanic with you and aren't going far if that belt breaks.

Syracuse to Dearborn? That's what, 400 miles? In a restored car manufactured after 1950 or so that's not traveling, that's an afternoon drive. Unless you've got something with a known reliability issue fire that thing up and go.
