Tray for Drip Pan or for Parts Assembly

I’m looking for a large spillover tray for automotive repair. So for spillovers that may happen during fluid service or repair work. I'm looking to use it even for working on messy or sensitive parts like transmission or transfer case.

For lack of a better idea, I was thinking about using a dog crate tray. Is anyone using a dog crate tray for the above described purposes and if so how does it work out?

Or is there perhaps anything better available? Preferably something that does not cost too much?

We had a laundry hamper that was falling apart so I bought a new one and cut the sides off the old one. It's now got low sides an inch maybe inch and a half high, plenty of room to work on and so far it doesn't seem to dissolve in anything.

How big does it need to be? and how deep?

Restaurant stainless steel "hotel" pans (many sizes) and sheet pans work well. The sheet pans are thin and there is a pretty big size available. Prices and quality can vary, with all the restaurants going out of business, you should be able to find used pretty easily. You will never crush one of these, well unless you drive over it...

There is a plastic tray you can get for under a water heater. Some have holes some do not.

A boot tray will work. A hot water heater collection tray would be ideal if it could be acquired before the hole is punched in the sidewall.

I bent up a 24" square pan of 16ga steel and 1.5 to 2" height and has been very useful for various leakers over time. Could use a protective base and an exterior paint job though.

Overflow pan that is used under HVAC units in attics? The one that goes under the blower unit. Those come in various sizes and also have a drain port.

i have the above mentioned FloTool drip pan under my 1929, Advance Auto $10.99 before any discounts.

i also have an open oil pan from Wally World for $5 like 14" diameter and 4" deep

as for bench work, a nice simple boot tray would work, as they are lightweight and cheap. Bed bath Beyond, amazon, lowes, home depot, etc... only about 1" - 1-1/2" tall and various sizes. most can be had for under $10
if you want to be fancy one get one with the ridges in it so the parts sit up on them not the bottom where the fluids sit.

NAPA sells steel oil drip pans in a few sizes which I use under my antiques cars. Same as in post above. Last week, I resurected an old push mower that was outside for years and filthy with rust, dirt and oil soaked crud. Cleaned it up over one of these pans and kept the epoxy floor nice and dirt free.

I've got a large, very low profile, 47"x25"x0.5" pan from NAPA. Been great keeping splatters and spills off the floor, especially doing cooling system repairs. Went with a metal pan option so I can have jack stands on it if needed and works equally well for some tear downs I've needed to do. It's held up well in the years I've had it. For under $25 it's well worth it.

I have a food service pan its 2 inches deep by 14 inches long works good when i was doing the differentials on my truck.

I use the 6 and 4" magnetic parts collector dishes from Harbor Freight for the small stuff that likes to hide in corners.

I have avoided large tear downs, Cardboard or Plywood makes a decent floor protector.

I like the sheet pans from restaurant supply stores. I was given a rolling rack to keep the pans in also.
I now find that I also use them for small projects. I spread the parts out on a pan and can store it in the rack if I dont finish.
