I did this once. We used a walk behind unit, did my 1/4 acre city lot with trees, and then went to the other guys farm and did his sprinkler system plus a 500 foot run to his barn. 24" deep trenches in very sandy soil was a breeze until we got to the part of my yard where I had done a lot of grading. We ended up using a come-along because the ditcher couldn't move itself in the loose soil.
Trenches at my house were left open for a few days while I put the system together. Hardest part was refilling the trenches by hand.
Somebody suggested talking to the local gas guy. My next door neighbor was that guy and he showed me how to fill the trenches with a hoe - years of experience beats enthusiasm everytime.
ps: I have no idea if the ditcher, come-along or the hoes had a Hobbs meter. I gave the other guy half of what he said it cost and counted myself lucky to have such good friends and neighbors.
