Tricks for removing sliding closet door finger pulls

As part of my home remodel I have elected to replace the door knobs with levers and went with the brushed nickel finish. Two of the bedrooms and the hall closet have sliding doors with the recessed finger pulls pictured below. Yeah I can grab them with pliers, pry the edge up and work around them with one if my mini pry bars, but just want to ask if someone who has done this knows any tricks. I don't have one but wondered if an internal pipe wrench might work.

Drill a small hole on the back side of the door and use a small punch to push it out. Expanding rubber auto frost plug if the size fits..... If they are glued in they probably will damage their surrondings.
