Put a piece of tape or the sticky part of a band aid over it when you go to sleep. As you sleep your skin relaxes and the sliver will stick to the tape.

all you need is a good(clean) pair of nail clippers. i keep one in my first aid kit, never used it to clip nails, strictly for splinters and it never failed.

Here is what I use:

I bet with the use of such pricise surgical tools spinning in excess of 20000 Rpm, you do not get splinters often......:headscrat

I usually dig them out with whatever is handy, tweezers, needle, pocket knife, snap on picks. As far as infection goes I don't take any special precautions. In twenty years as a mechanic I've gone to work so many times with cuts and stitches and never had an infection that I believe there is some kind of antifungal ingredient in grease. My mother used to freak out at me saying things like you can go to work in all that dirt with stitches, you'll end up with gangrene.Eventually she just started shaking her head in amazement that every cut heals fast with no complications.

I sterilize a firm sewing needle under a flame until its red hot then once it cools off, starting at the point of entry, I begin picking away surface skin to create a slightly bigger opening and hopefully expose an end of the splinter to tweeze out.

Once I'm done, I clean up thoroughly and even use a little peroxide.

The key is to work sloooowly.

This is a good way to do it. Sometimes if you have to do a lot of picking it helps to put the needle in a pin vise with only about 1/2 inch or so sticking out. It makes for a much easier way to hang onto the needle and gives you more leverage.
