Tried shearing a bolt with IR's 2235TiMAX today

Neither my 2135 PTi nor the new 2235TiMAX would bust one of these suckers...15/16" head...minor diameter is just over 1/2 in thick (see image).

I set this up with a piece of RR track that has a hole through it...I used washers on either side, and held the bolt with a combination wrench.

I'm kind of surprised the 2235 TiMAX wouldn't bust these...I'm not sure of the grade but apparently they're pretty tough.

Granted that is over 1/2 an inch of solid steel.

Why the hell would you expect any impact to shear an unrusted, unused, unweakened 1/2 bolt?.....:headscrat

They're both used, old by the looks of it.
I got suggestions to try that out in a previous thread...I had a pair of these, used this to give me an idea of sizes.

I shouldn't say I'm surprised it didn't shear it, rather, I'm surprised it didn't inflict a little more damage the the 2135 PTi (bolt "A"). :dunno:

The 2235TiMAX did put a small bend in "B" though. Pretty impressive on IR's part.

The things people think these new "wonder" impacts can do is funny sometimes. When will you stop playing with tinker toys and get a 3/4".

Old style Sears Craftsman lawnmowers had 15/16 nut on end of crankshaft turned down to (I believe) 5/8" nominal diameter stud (SAE Fine thread?) I had been in the habit of torquing mine to 80 ft. lb. but saw where a professional said to not go over 65 ft. lb.
is bigger than car lug nut studs but probably no stronger than grade one or even less-malleable iron?

if that was grade 8 the torque capacity would probably be way up there-300 ft. lb. +?

This is coarse thread, I figured it was untreated/mild and the threads would give away fairly easily.

I guess to just spin a blade it really doesn't need to be that strong. :dunno:

Keep in mind both of those impacts are reverse biased, so the torque in reverse is greater. Perhaps if you had left-handed bolts...

For the record, both impacts effortlessly spun off the bolts they'd tightened. :beer:

For the same SAE nominal diameter I think the "fine" has a thicker minor diameter than the "course" thread

I wonder-is the stud/bolt more likely to break because of stretch or is it torsion/twist that kills it? For instance a capscrew going into a blind threaded hole that isn't deep enough so that the screw bottoms out without clamping its washer-does it break at less torque applied than if the bolt had a proper hole that allowed it to clamp its washer?

Well, I would get one but at least at my shop none of our air hoses, reels or fittings are sized for 3/4" drive tools. I've tried a few over the years on our system but they suffer badly. A hot rod 1/2" impact out does it. I usually find myself needing big power in a tight area or find myself working overhead a lot and a 3/4 would **** for that.

+1...unfortunately even the shops that do require breaking out a separate air hose, and often only have one fitting...which is, of course, too far away for the bigger hose to reach!

The thread is also stronger as well. I always thought it was "stretch" myself.

I usually use a IR 2145 (3/4) on 5/8 grade 5 bolts in my truck frame, and I have stripped the threads tightening on occasion !

I have always ran my 3/4" impact which is a Mac rebadged of an IR plastic body on 3/8" line and it still smoke my mg725.

Fasteners will almost always fail from tension unless they are damaged.

I don't think I'd want a 1/2" impact that could twist off what the OP is describing as apparently a 5/8" bolt (what else has a 15/16 hex head?). I think if my daily use 1/2" impact could twist off bolts that large it would be costing me more time in broken fasteners than it would be saving me on stubborn ones.


A while back when I scored a deal on a used 1" impact wrench, I did just for shits and grins put it on a new 5/8" grade 5 bolt that was already tight, put it on forward, and pulled the trigger. It twisted that bolt right off within about 5 beats of the hammer.

If one is going to improvise a rudimentary torque testing procedure by seeing how large of a bolt can be twisted off by an impact wrench, what size should it be able to break?

I would expect a good 1/2" impact to be able to break 3/8" bolts easily if overtightened. If it's breaking bolts larger than that, it may very be "too powerful for it's own good".
