Trouble With Bench Grinder

Recently got a Cummins Bench Grinder as a gift, looks pretty new, but when I start it up the wheels turn very slowly. It's a 3,000+ rpm motor but I can put my finger on it to stop it. What would cause it to go so slowly? I don't know too much about wiring, I've only recently been getting into tools/woodworking etc. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

You say the wheels start slowly and you can stop them with your fingers. Do you stop the motor as well? If the motor stalls then yes, you have a problem there that I'm not qualified to address. But if just the wheels stop, the arbor nuts may have vibrated loose. If the wheels don't come up to speed with the motor then they've got to be loose.

I tightened the nuts outside of the grinder wheel (which were slightly loose), but the actual bar itself is spinning slowly also. I can let go of the wheel and it will spin again.

The motor itself also "sounds" slow. My dad has a black and decker grinder, I've used that quite a bit and never had any trouble. I can remember how the motor sounded louder and faster I guess. If that makes any sense.

Cummins was an outfit that travelled around like a circus selling the crappiest tools on earth. They went out of business some years ago.

How many amps or watts does it draw? They porbably list it in watts to make it look like a big number.
