Truck bed trailers, why are they so cheap??

I have been looking to buy a cheap trailer since I got rid of my last one, but the prices of flat beds are out of sight. I think a long, truck bed trailer would suit me just fine.

Does anyone have an opinion on them? I would just be using it locally for my wife's business. Seems you can get a pretty decent one for around $150-200 bucks.

Thanks in advance.

I can see a couple reasons why a more conventional trailer would be better.

First, a truck bed trailer is suspect in construction. The builder really needs to know how to weld, and to make a safe structure. If not, a dangerous condition exists.

Second, a truck bed trailer is inevitably taller than a conventional trailer, so harder to load, especially heavy items.

Third, it would be much heavier than a purpose built trailer.

Generally, on Craigs List, and other sales papers, you can find real used trailers for not much more, depending on size. Also, there are numerous trailers available by local companies for $4-600 in a 5x8 configuration that would be similar in size to a truck bed trailer, and with equal or better load capacity. Finally, you could go inexpensive and get a Harbor Freight trailer for under $400. They are surprisingly strong and durable. Just make sure you get one with 12" tires.

I would add that in some states you can not obtain a title for a truck bed trailer.

Depends what you are using it for. I have one as well as a 8x10 flatdeck and a 32' gooseneck. They all have a purpose. I like my truckbox trailer for hauling garbage etc because of the sides. I also got a free topper someone wanted out of their yard. I can haul a load of firewood in it in the fall anf leave it in there and keeps it dry and out of the snow. Really depends on how often and the purpose. Remember to check the diff oil as it seems to be a major issue with bearings etc going out from lack of maintenance.
