Hello everyone, I wanted to share my barn build the group to reflect what i would consider a true DIY building, including the trusses. There are a lot of thread about DIY/cheap barns, etc. (everyone wants to save money) this is my experience doing all the work myself and keeping this project as CHEAP as possible. I hope this thread helps others looking to do the same on a budget. I tried to take a bunch of pictures as well, I love pictures!

Disclaimer*** this thread is meant to share my experience with others. I wouldn't recommend anyone jumping in with both feet without knowing your limitations. While my education consists of an engineering degree, I am not an certified one. No plans were followed in the construction of this building, other than the trusses. My knowledge only allows me enough courage to make what I would consider an educated decision, whether they are right or wrong, you can debate.

Couple years ago I bought some undeveloped land, partially cleared (field) and partially wooded with the intention of building a home in a few years. In the meantime, I am growing hay for our animals and selling some to clients as well. The building will be used to house equipment as well as hay storage.

I started by renting an excavator ($2,200 for the week for a 30k lb machine) to clear the site for future home/barns, etc. setting the larger logs off to the side to take to the local mill who offers custom cut services. He charges $80 an hour to mill the logs however you please. It sounded high at first, but this guy gets a LOT done in a hour.

I knew roughly what size building I wanted, but a lot was dependent upon how many boards I got out of the lumber.

Here is one of the three loads I took to the mill on the first go-round. Two loads were about this size, the third came from a friends home that lost a very sizable Red Oak.

I work for the power company so I was able to get some old poles from work. After the owner at the mill concurred my "lumber wish list" was reasonable, given the logs i brought him, I decided on a 32 wide x 36 deep building. There will be a 16' lean-to off the left side, as well as a 16' lean-to off the back.

Poles being set - this took a full day. They are HEAVY. We slide the pole base near the holes and used my 75hp tractor with loader to scoop the end in the air, with a rope tied to the top going either way for balance. Lifted the pole in the air and they slide right in the holes. Added some concrete and braces and we left them be.

You will notice two of the poles for the lean to are removed in future photos since I changed my mind halfway through on dimensions, and forgot to move some of the stakes. Luckily after this photo was taken, my wonderful fiancé said "these posts don't look the same distance away." After I informed he she had no idea what she was talking about I ate my words and had to pull the incorrectly set poles.

Clearing was done October 2020, poles sets Dec 2020. Now for the waiting game - the mill is slow getting orders out.

March 2021 - wood was finally ready! Out of the three loads of logs I brought, I got back two large trailer loads of misc sizes. Again, all per my request. The weird lengths were intentional with I cut the logs as I had a vision for the end product.

All of this lumber for was $600 having it custom cut.

(6) 2x12x20 oak - for lean to headers to span 18'
(12+) 2x12x12 oak - for headers between poles
lots of 2x6x18+ pine/poplar for trusses
lots of 2x4x18 pine for purlins

The poles for the main frame 32x36 portion of the barn are 12' spans, I wanted the barn to be high enough to stack three rounds bales. The ground falls a bit so the front is about 16' tall, the rear just under 18' (I will level things out a bit when I'm ready for gravel). I doubled up true 2x12 oak boards for the headers. There aren't many photos of the header board install as I did that mostly by myself - had to call in help for the headers towards the rear of the barn as the boards were too heavy and the tractor wouldn't reach that high.

Single headers mostly up - as you can see poles were notched 4" to allow for width of two 2x12's

Doubled headers - drilled/through bolted to pole. Headers were then tied together with 3.5" ring shank nails and 4' timber lock style screws.

Now for the trusses - this wasn't tough, but it was time consuming. I bought/downloaded a manual from the late 80's regarding wood truss construction with plywood gusset plates. At the time, this was an approved manual for building construction - it included snow/wind loading and anchoring calculation by particular region. For some reason it was surprising, however, the snow load used back then for my region of Virginia was the same as it is now - 26 lb/sq ft. For the over thinkers (like myself) on this forum, the manual provided charts for different classes of wood. It also does not take into account "dimensional" lumber (i.e. a store bought 2x6 (1.5x5.5") vs. true dimensional lumber which in my case is a true 2"x6" board. The trusses are primarily made from a mixture of Virginia pine (not loblolly) and poplar which have similar characteristics on the strength/quality chart. 10 trusses were required for the 36' building, spaced 4' on center.

The trusses are 32' wide and I only have one tractor - it would've been impossible to load them at the house and off load at the property. So I had to build them onsite. This was fine, with the exception that I didn't have a level surface - so, I created one. I used two telephone poles, which are far from straight. I took me a good portion of an afternoon to form a jig to build these on. Using strings/levels, etc. I shimmed 2x4's and made a flat surface. The following day, I put together the first truss. Initially, I intended a 5/12 pitch because I like the look of steep roof, but misreading the schematic I build a 4/12 accidentally so I went with that given the time invested. Plus, most ag buildings/garages are 4/12 anyway. I used 2x4 blocks and many marks/notes on the jig to make recreation of the trusses easier. The top chords are 18.5' long, I intentionally cut the logs this length to minimize splices on top/bottom chords.

Plywood gussets are 1/2" 4 ply. There is little to no benefit going with a thicker plywood beyond 1/2" from reading the manual. This part was expensive given COVID - about $500 in plywood alone, I think it was 8 sheets required for 11 trusses. Gussets were cut per the manuals recommendations. Splice for the bottom chord was a 24" section of 1" thick lumber, same wood type as the trusses. Each of the gusset plates were liquid nailed (construction adhesive) and nailed per the truss manual's guidance. I will say i was surprised how impossible it was to remove the gusset plates the following day when i made a mistake.

It was recommended by a friend to use screws, however, screws have a much lower sheer strength compared to nails - so they are not ideal from what i understand. Lots and lots of 2 3/8 " galvanized ring shank nails.

Building day! April 2021

Called a few buddies, one who has a tractor with a jib boom he can rig up. He had single J-hook that we lifted the center of the trusses from... this went against every engineering vein in my body, I hated the thought of lifting from a single point like that.

Setting trusses was fast - took longer to move the ladders and measure the next set point than anything else. Starting at 8:30am we were done by 11 am.

It was hot this day. We got some good braces on the trusses and quit about 2pm. Left it till the next morning at which point my brother and I got the 2x4 purlins put on. Dad was on the ground handing up 2x4's - a good ground man is a necessity working 16' in the air. repeated ladders will put a hurtin' on ya.

Trussed we toe nailed and further secured with hurricane ties.

Following weekend we got the roof on - I enlisted a buddy and his teenage son to help me with this. Just in time for our first cutting of hay at this location memorial day weekend...

Fast forward to this spring. We got married in September so the better part of the summer was spent getting the in-laws farm "wedding ready." Then hunting season.

Over the winter we had a terrible storm with heavy snow that broke a bunch of trees at the house. Loaded up another healthy trailer of some nice oaks/poplar and took a trip to the mill.

Few weeks back I got the rest of the poles set and picked up the newly cut lumber. This load will be used for the side/rear lean-to's.

Most of this I did by myself, which is a task with relatively green wood. Friday I got the headers hung - this took most of the day. Double stacked and staggered 2x8x12's for the headers against the main portion of the barn. Through bolts at the poles, with timberlocks and 3" ring shanks tying the headers.

I intend to access the lean to from the side to park the haybine and my no till drill, both are wide. So the header boards are double 2x12x20's I had waiting from last spring - they span an 18' opening. One got slightly warped from the weather so that was a bit of a fight to get it up straight.

Saturday I got the rafters hung. These posts are actually 14' from the main building, again, accessing the lean to from the side I opt'd to shorten the span to 14' opposed to 16' for improved support. Rafters are a mixture of rough cut pine/poplar 2x4x16 (true dimension) on 24" centers.

The slope I intended was 2/12 which should have been 2.33' @ 14' span however, I took my point of measure from the base of the header boards not taking into account the difference between the 12" and 8" headers. The slope ended up being like 1.89/12.... I didn't notice this until I put up the first rafter. Decided to let it be as redoing headers would be an undertaking to say the least, I hope/don't think it will be detrimental as we don't often get large volumes of snow here.

Sunday we hit it hard. Dad showed up while I was in the middle of putting purlins on, (2x4x16 pine) at 24" on center.

Finishing point for the weekend. Roof on and secure... ignore the massive wave directly in the center of the lean to. I didn't realize how bad that board was warped, plan to get on the ladder and address that, it will drive me nuts if I don't.

More to come in the next few weeks!

Plan to start hanging trim on the barn and lean-to, as well as start siding certain portions. Also, start construction on the rear lean-to.

If it doesn't help anyone with their project, hope ya'll at least enjoyed the build/photos.

As always, I would be happy to hear any constructive and non-constructive feedback haha!

That looks like a lot of work that's been done very well! It's great to see the skill sets of some of our members as they tackle their projects. Congrats on the wedding, always a big step that should last a life time! Keep posting even if comments are light, the page views is how you'll know how its going. Personally, I'm along for the ride!
