Truss installation help!!

Ok, this may be a super easy answer but for the life of me i can not figure it out. If i have a pole barn that is going to be 48' long with post 12' OC and the trusses are engineered to be 12' OC as well, i feel like i would end up short when installing. Basically truss #1 starts on the outside of the end wall posts if i go 12' OC from there would the 5th truss fall on the wrong side of the pole? Im confused need help.

Your barn may be different.... But.....

On my barn all the center trusses sat on top of the columns... the only trusses that nailed to the face of the column was the gable trusses... and then cripple studs were nailed under them, into the column.



2 ply truss - 4 ply column... therefore the outside 2 ply's of the column trap the truss in its location:

So I'm planning on using 3 ply column, if i can get them around my location. If the gable trusses are mounted to the outside with a cripple stud under it for support wouldn't the truss spacing be as follows 12'1.5"-12'-12'-12'-12'1.5". i was going to hang my purlins between the trusses also.

Those center trusses will be 1-ply or 2-ply?

I was under the impression they were all 1 ply

In all the framing I've done or seen, the measurements are not actually OC , for the first to second post. Rather Outside to center, for the reasons you state.

Does this do anything for you? It helps sometimes to draw it out. Those measurements are all center to center of the posts which gives 48' to the outside of the end trusses....

Edit: To elaborate, its 12' center to center of the interior trusses and 12' from the outside edge of the exterior trusses to the center of the next interior truss... My drawing assumes the truss sits beside of the posts and not on top, notched, etc.

I did a drawing similar to this as well. The center trusses are going to be in notches in the middle of the post. The end trusses would be attached to the outside of the post. My pole layout had 12' from outside of pole to center of next. So i guess I am right about thinking the trusses will be just slightly farther apart than 12' OC unless i move my corner poles in 1.5" each.

I doubt that, with them spaced on 12' centers.

What is the span and where are you located? Might be a good idea to update your profile to include your location.

it is only a 12' span. It is a monitor style barn and the trusses are for the center aisle. Live in Louisiana and they trusses were calculated by the truss company for 12' OC.

Try not to worry so much about the spacing of the posts and look at where you need to put the posts so the truss is spaced how you want them to be.

The truss will not be further apart than 12' unless you want them to be. They will be 12' if you want them to be 12'. Here is another drawing with the interior posts centered under the truss. Its simply 12' from the outside of the exterior truss to the center of the interior truss.... Each corner post would need to be set in 1.5" or 3" overall so that its 48' to the outside of the exterior trusses.
