I've only framed maybe a 1/2 dozen roofs, always rafters, never trusses. Can I order an odd length truss, like for top plates that are 29' 7 3/8" out to out? (dimension result of dry lay and surface bonded block) It would seem a 30' with an extra block near the heel would also work, but need the engineer to agree. 17 + 2 gables 2' on center - so more than a couple.

Thanks!

In many areas the engineer will not sign off on an altered truss, no mater how minimal the alteration is. You will most likely need to order them to size.

No. They take your measurements, throw them into a computer, and get a full spec for the truss with all the pieces measured to a fraction of an inch. They cut all the pieces and make them to scratch. there is no point in making up a bunch and waiting for someone to want them. If you need 23 and two end trusses, they will make that. No more, no less. I get mine from my local lumber yard. I show them a plan, or give them dimensions, and I get to choose what style truss I want, or I can ask what they suggest. They talk to their truss supplier, and get back to me with a printout and a price. The printout is exactly what I will be getting, with a nice diagram, and specs.

This will make a lot more sense to you when you call your supplier, or drop in for a chat.

I did go to local family owned lumber yard less than a 1/4 mile from me, they took all the info (not much really) and never got back. I assumed and they confirmed they know local snow loads, helpful. I just thought before I went back I'd see what I could learn. Again, my thanks to everyone. Daniel, just what I thought except I didn't know about lengths to fractions of an inch.
