Planning a garage and one of the exterior walls that the trusses bottom chord will sit on needs to have a 22' clear span. Live in southern VA - no snow kid.

Similar to the attached picture - where the garage door is on the soffit side, not the gable side.

Has anyone done a span similar to this? If so, what did you use? Thanks!

I have done longer openings with engineered lumber. Some are up to 24" deep.

Agree....review your plan with a reputable lumber yard who will spec it all out for you.

Don't agree.....I live in southeastern Virginia and we do get snow....sometimes well over a foot and it is usually the wet kind, not the powdery stuff. Your local lumber yard will be aware of the snow load requirements... another good reason for using them

close to 100% chance to have a steel beam needed

Imo, not even close. An 18' opening is very common all over for a double car garage. An LVL is easily special ordered up to 40' long.

If you have a 2x6 wall you can triple a standard 1-3/4" LVL.

If you follow the span tables (cataloged) it will lead you to the solution or at least lead you to the additional information you need to know.

It is going to be in your interest to start eating more Wheaties, start doing favors for friends so you can bulk up on return-work, or plan for some sort of a powered lifting device like a tractor, forklift, etc. The LVLs are quite heavy..

Steel vs Wood will depend on the amount of space between the door and the eve.
Still will be more compact.
