Talk with East Tx Truss Company, couple days ago to get price on about 36 trusses being 5/12 pitch with 3’ overhang on each side for 32’ walls. I was getting 1 truss as extra for just in case one is damage. Drum roll please- 11,000 that’s rounding it off. Last year I got price from another company they came in little over 8,000 but that was 4/12 pitch w/2’ overhangs.
So talk will sales guy at company see if I drop pitch from 5/12 to 4/12 and shorten overhang if that would lower cost which he replied “ Just little “ he said that it’s the amount is what driving cost up. Not 270.00 delivery nor 720.00 in taxes. But he did say that their top/bottom chords is 2x6’s the other truss company was only one was 2x6
Yes I am sticker shock, not lot selection when it comes to trusses. No questions just me crying

Dang! Maybe I should start fabricating trusses in my backyard! I'll design, sign/seal and fab them myself. I've got a brother that drives a semi truck. LOL

I'm kidding.

Sorry. I know, it's depressing.

I am starting to think we are all getting scr-wed on nearly everything. I get the pandemic etc but I think they got us used to double prices and they have dropped to only 50% too much so they may stay there. My guide is a case of 9mm ammo. Used to be $200. Got up to $600+ and it is now about $300. It has been $300 for 5-6 months now.

Its insane out there. At least lumber has came down a tad. I was talking to my wife about this just last night. I make pretty good money, but where is it going? I really feel for people living paycheck to paycheck trying to build their shop or finish their garages. It's just not doable for 60% of the population anymore.

Insignificant in comparison, but yesterday I spent $48 for a 20" & 24" wiper blades. It was the next one up from the bottom grade. It's just stupid out there.

Check Rock Auto for wiper blades. My pickup stays outside and trees overhang the driveway so wiper blades only last about a year. 18" blades that cost $10-$11 each locally are $3 at Rock. The beam type blades that go for $20+ each are $7-$8 at Rock. Basically 3 sets from Rock cost the same or less than a single set from Advance, AutoZone, or O'Reilly locally.

as an aside, i visited my truss fab place and they had a LCD projector up on the ceiling shining down on a work table lighting up the truss to build at 1;1 scale. I didn't note if they had computerized cutting but the dude "hammering the nail plates" could be "hammered" himself with that kind of system its hard to goof up.

Given that your trusses are 38' with overhangs and $10k minus tax and delivery you're only paying around $280 per truss. That beats the Menards online price (only place I've found them online) significantly.

Taking into account dimensional lumber prices and that you'll get stamped engineering with them that doesn't seem too bad.

Doesn't sound bad at all. A year back, I paid $17k for a set of trusses for 30 x 60 addition in MN. Admittedly a bit more custom / complex than what you're probably looking at - hip on one end, mixed slope 3.5/12 on one side 5/12 on other, vaulted ceiling in half of the trusses, tie into existing roof, etc. But probably fewer trusses and less material overall than what you describe.

I paid $313 each for 40' wide attic trusses a year ago. 7/12 pitch, 80 psf attic floor live load. I waited as long as I could for the price to come down. They were originally quoted at $303, went all the way up to $377 and back down to $313 when I couldn't wait any longer. That was from March to August 2021.

Corporate profits are at 70-year highs, it ain't worker wages that are driving inflation! GREED!!

It seems to be the middle man is where the inflation is, the costs have gone up but the profits have doubled. Pricing out a roof materials & labor are 9k, cost proposal was 19k, 10k in profit, just absurd.

Last year they were 245.00 which in my little world is high, so with Lumber Futures going down little I figured now is time but I was wrong again. I know there are people who price doesn’t matter, but for me it does

Sure it is, we bid work on a 20% markup, if you're bidding on 100% markup that's pure profit. It seems everyone is taking advantage of the consumer and increasing their net profits, which is really driving up costs.
Never heard of overhead, I see

You guys are only adding 20% to labor and materials? How long have you been in business?

I know you don't have Menards in Texas, but they are charging $211 for a 32' truss 4/12 with 2' overhangs. The 5/12 pitch trusses require a quote.

How do you know what the company's labor cost is? If the company is doing everything legally are you including the sky high cost of worker's comp insurance for roofers? If they have an office and people working in the office are you including those costs?

Actually yes, I had a good conversation with the owner. Once he realized I wasn't hiring him we talked a while and pretty much said he's charging what the market will bear. As a union gc I know what the costs are, but I have to bid competitivley, most home improvement guys can charge whatever they want. As a comparison I just got another quote for 13k, the residential prices are all over the map and people seem desperate.

Some companies sure are gouging, sure. But most (probably smaller to medium) are often lagging on pricing
Not here on long Island, luckily I don't need to hire anyone but from what I'm hearing it sure prices really went up. If I can do my roof cheaper with union labor somethings wrong. Most residential guys around here have a couple of key guys and they fill in the rest with day laborers. I'm sure there are some legit guys, but most seem to be doing this. It must work, go by a busy hd here early in the am and they're waiting to be picked up.

I think it is greed, from small mom and pop shops to large company's. The prices are pie in the sky high, everything to do with swinging a hammer has gone nuts. Wish anyone with thoughts of building a garage any time in the future good luck and it's not just the prices but the skilled or not workforce. All smoke and mirrors.

Our trusses were about $125 each for 22 38' long, 5/12 trusses. That was 10 years ago, though. Design, engineering, and delivery were all included. The trusses have a 1' energy heel, and are rated at 120 MPH, versus the standard 90 MPH for our area. I just gave them the exact span of the walls; they took it from there. I'm glad I'm not building today. At the time, 5/8 OSB roof sheathing was $10 a sheet.

In 2018 I paid $11,900 for 33 trusses (most regular, some scissor, some attic) for a 29' span with 14" overhangs. So I don't think your price is outrageous. Then again, I was paying California prices...

Not sure if you have any Amish near you but I'd reach out to them for a quote. I bought mine from them better quality and cheaper then Menards

I'd wait. With interest rates at 20 year highs, the construction industry / housing market is going to come to a screeching halt...
Going to try my best to drag my feet on my next big purchase. I do have pretty good list for just framing and front/ back porch

do not be afraid to think of opitions
the Jordan Steel is a good example
there are also companies that make steel trusses with a traditional look
then look into no trusses at all, but use a roof beam and rafter construction

Good morning GJ, well as I past out due to sticker shock for price of trusses which came in over 11k. So I search on the Louisiana side which is only few miles away from where I'm building. Giving the same truss information I have to say them cajun boys must know how to do it better cause they came in 8500 with me rounding up. I'm happy with that, but I did ask for diagrams for common trusses and gable end trusses. Said they would email them to me on Monday. I just need to make sure we are on same page before I hit that "Buy it Now button". If we are on same page then I will be placing my truss order which will take about couple weeks before I receive them.
