hey guys , im planning on building an attached garage to my house , my house is 28' wide with a bay window in the corner , I want to build a 28' x 40' , i will need to off set the garage so that i do not cover the window and my question to you is how do i measure where the building will sit so that the back side of the roof will line up with existing building .. is it possible to know dimensions of trusses before they are ordered the pitch will be 4/12

Truss company will engineer it for you and send you measured drawings along with cost estimate.

Not sure exactly how to interpret what you're asking, but you can do a lot with a plumb bob, some stakes, and string. (If you want to spend more money, a transit works too.) The plumb bob would be useful if what you're trying to do is locate the roof/fascia and stay in line. Is that what you mentioned wanting to do? If you're trying to match building edges, go to the far end of the existing building, tack a nail in to wrap it around, and extend the string out past the other end to where you want the new building while keeping the offset at the end the same as on the nail.

Someone else may chime in with other ideas, but that's what I came up with that can get a good enough location with materials I have on hand.

As for the truss dimensions, other than what you have planned, that will depend on your desired overhang and engineering.

thanks for the reply .. but what im trying to get at is I need to figure out where my roof peak will meet up with my existing roof , I want to keep it at the same height. http://www.buckstonebuilders.com/index.php?p=1_35_Garages-Pole-Bldgs-Pics what I want to do is similar to the garage in the link (first and second pics) the only difference is that I want the peak to land right on the existing roof line .

If you set the building back the ridge will not line up no matter what you do. The ridge on the new part will be back the amount of the offset. You can still match the front eave by cantalivering the truss's in the front.
If you don't have a GC take your plans, you do have some right, to the truss plant and tell them what you want to do. They will design and price them for you.

Measure down from your existing roof peak to a point where you can conveniently attach one end of the string. Now stretch the string out with the string level on it to where you want the other building. Add/subtract height from that level point based on building heights and ground elevations.

Edit: Oops! Misread this as "detached" garage instead of attached.

You can't do it. 28' will not line up with 28' unless the walls are in line. Draw an elevation from the new end and see for yourself. If I'm reading this right, if the roof lined up with the existing roof, you would have no roof over the length of the offset.

Consider building an alcove where the bay is. Maybe a mirror of the footprint.

Better yet, show us the plot plan.
