Trying to nail down the final touches on pole barn. Need to let contractor know something next day or so. Trying to decide on trusses. Building size is 40W x 64L x 12H. Last decision made was 4/12 pitch w/18" overhang and trusses on 24" centers. Planned on going with OSB board, bubble insulation & then metal on roof. Most of my friends says I do not need the OSB board & do not need the trussess on 24" centers, but on 48" & roof girts 2 x 4's on edges instead of flat on 2' centers. They say it is a waste of money.
I am wanting to have a finished inside & want the bldg very tight/ very good insulation. Also want to have some storage in the attic, which means a floor so to speak. Not wanting a room up there, but a place to store boxes, plastic tubs, Christmas ornaments/decorations etc. I want the building well insulated & to be able to heat the bldg. with a small heatr. Anyway, need info as to which way to go on trusses situation.

Dont know. I'm not a gearhead & this building will not be for that reason. But, I want something nice & clean. It will be to store my truck & bass boat, lawn equipment, odds & ends. I want a wash station to wash & clean my truck/boat/whatever up if its cold and nasty outside. I am going to have one small corner to play/build/tinker with fishing baits, etc. I made the statment about me not being a gearhead. I find that the more that I go to this GJ website, I am wanting to be one. I reallly like a lot of the ideas I am finding on here.

If you are are not a gear head, thus you don't need alift, so why the 12' walls? Thats alot of unused space to heat and cool. You can get trusses designed for over head storage or a finished room.

Lots of pole buildings with trusses on 4',6', and 8' centers. They engineer the truss for the application. My building is 42' wide and the trusses sit atop the poles 6' apart. I don't recall for sure but it seems to me they used 2x6 strapping to screw the tin into. It is finished inside with tin and insulation blown in to R40. It is 3.5/12 pitch in a snow area.

Depending on where you live I would go with the 24" on center trusses. Snow load and wind load always scares us. We also use hurricane braces to attach the trusses. We don't get hurricanes here but a tornado will take your roof and relocate it just as easy.

You can get the trusses with center storage down the middle of them but I would go a little stepper on the pitch if you could just to get a little more room in the attic.

If you have the budget for the 12' walls I would go that route. You never know what hobby your going to have in five years. You may need the height for an rv or a lift. Dad always says when you build it, overbuild it when you can and go bigger than you think you need.

Well, one reaon for the 12' ceilings, is I have a son with a 01 F=350 that is --well -- lifted. I wont say anymore than, I can't get in the truck without a latter. He is wanting to use it some. Maybe. Anyway. Right now plans are for the 3 ply poles to be on 8' centers.

With a 4"pitch you are going to gain 6'-8". If you want storage I would go with "attic" trusses two foot on center and sheet the roof. Regular trusses are not designed for a storage load. You need to establish a diaphragm in the roof. You cannot rely on metal roofing for the diaphragm. A lot of things work untill they fall down. It's like when the cow dies and the farmer says " he never did that before". The walls will need proper shear to transfer the roof diaphragm to the ground.

I like truss co's.Maybe its 'cause we buy chit from them? But they've always been very "free" with their engineering help. And NO,not talkin about bending their ear on structural problems............

Am talkin the "what-ifs".IOWs,I can go in and talk over a project whilst they're runnin specs and #'s.Say runnin piggybacks or "super trusses" and where the money line is(value vs return)on how far to take an idea I might be entertaining,n'est pas?
