I was told today that the flat-flat hammers in regular lengths will be available in red June 1st. The plant is pretty good about beating their estimates for time. I'll update this post when I have new information.

I believe this is my first post of a complete set of blue flat-flat hammers. I think we're a little ahead of schedule with the standard size flat-flats, and we might have hammers available before June. I'll get my arms wrapped around the standard size flat-flats early next week.

Do you guys have the blue flat/flat hammers ready yet?

I've been away from the site for a week or so, so not sure if I missed anything.

saw the red flat/flat sale, thats why I asked.

The blue are very nice, they don't show grime as much, so I use those in the shop. I have the green for my non dirty work, plus they are easier to find on the job site. Both are very nice colors, I am glad I could justify not choosing.

We have some of the 26 & 36 blue flat-flat hammers ready to ship right now, as well as some stubbies.

I don't see any green flat-flats on the site, only red and blue. When do you expect to list the green ones? Also, is there a current Garage Journal promo code?

Thanks for updating your site and having international shipping. Would have brought hammers from Trusty Cook a while ago but the old site did not offer shipping outside of the US.

Just got my 36oz flat-flat and model 2. Thanks Richard that was quick.

Got a question about the flat-flat, it does not seem to have any shot in it. I can't hear or feel any movement in the head. is this normal? I though this was a deadblow.

You're welcome.

You won’t hear the shot inside the head of a ball peen/flat-flat, which are made the same way. The attached photos show the components of a ball peen. We machine the components in house from 6150 steel. After we machine the components, we send the components to heat treat. We finish up the components by polishing once heat treat is done.

About 15 years ago, Trusty-Cook was not making ball peen hammers. We were approached by a large private label customer that wanted us to begin manufacturing ball peens again. The owners did not want to begin making ball peens again, but the customer was persistent. There had always been a problem with ball peens in general and not just from Trusty-Cook: a high failure in the head. All manufacturers were using a design that threaded the two components of the head together. The design with threads contributed to metal fatigue and cracking. The Trusty-Cook team came up with a redesigned head, a thread-less head that uses a pin. The big company that purchases many green ball peens from us has been extremely happy. Their failure rate of ball peens has gone from mid-teens to negligible. To our knowledge, no other manufacturer uses the thread-less design.

Sorry for being long winded. Now, to answer your original question, there is shot in the head of the ball peens and flat-flats to give the hammers dead blow action. The thick steel prevents any sound, and, obviously, the size of the head limits the amount of shot that goes in the head. We’ve been asked about making an 8-12-ounce ball peen. We only make dead blow hammers, and we don’t feel in a smaller hammer we could get enough shot in the head to give the hammer a dead blow action.

Very cool pics of the how the dead is made! Yes, you can hear the shot but you really have to try to hear it on purpose.

ah I see. I didn't know it was a solid head like that, I assumed it was just the faces applied to a plastic head. very impressive machining.

I never use the small end, so a flat-flat with the same size heads on both sides would be perfect. The balance would be phenomenal.
