For hobbyist automotive work I would suggest our Mechanics 3-pack, which consists of a 36 oz ball peen, our 45 oz model #3, and our 22 oz, model# S2. You might have some forum members tell you to replace the 36 oz BP with the 43 oz stubby--the short handle and added heft can come in handy. If you're doing some general home improvement work the #3 and S2 should be useful. Obviously a claw hammer is a necessity for carpentry, but I'd want to know a specific application for before recommending one of our soft-faced hammers for carpentry work.

I'm trying to pick out a hammer to get for my girlfriend's sister for Christmas. I think it would be a fun gift. She's a backhoe operator though so I can't think of a reason to have any kind of hammer with you really. It'd probably just be for around the farm. Going to have to go look through the pile and pick a size. I've almost got a TC showroom in the bottom drawer of my box (Though nothing like Strouty's armada).

Soft face hammers are great for coercing things into place like joinery. You can basically use them like a leather face mallet. I use a TC Model 4 to seat half-lap joints. Also good for knocking said joints back apart after a test fit.

My order came today, a handful of them including the extra sledges are gifts but I still had to remove the HF hammers and rearrange my drawer to fit mine in. The quality on the blem sledge hammers was surprisingly good and was nicer than the pink ones that came with some porosity.
