Need some advice on using chat as fill under my floor. We did this when I was a kid helping my dad on his driveway and his garage. Its not as fine as sand and it compacts nicely. Anyone have any advice? I can get as much as I want for free. Is there a reason for using rock over other materials? Heres a pic of the start.

If it contains material up to 3/4 inch or so, and is highly compactable, it sounds like modified item four and should make a good base for concrete. Pack it every four inches with a plate compactor, or use a jumping jack compactor.

Many people use gravel because they consider it to be self compacting. Not strictly so, but close.
