Cameras are only good after the fact. Got a mask on and there no good at all. All a burglar needs is 2 minutes to go through your house even with an alarm going off. Just looking for cash, change and jewelry. A gun does really good when you as a truck driver are 500 miles from home. A dog is a lot of work.

if it were me this is what I would do. get a large dog food dish and put it at the front and rear doors on the outside. put a couple of electronic dog barking alarms inside. Check the link below. My friend installed installed them and I thought it was a joke when he told me and I first seen them. I was wrong. If i was on the outside trying to get in herd what sounded like a large dog. I would be gone in a heartbeat.

I think everyone agrees that insurance is necessary, but it is never going to save the day. My uncle had storm damage to his roof and the insurance company paid for new shingles. He was so proud of his "free roof". I wanted to say to him, how exactly is it a free roof when you have paid tens of thousands of dollars in home owners insurance throughout the years? Not to mention many of us have irreplaceable items from family that are worth nothing in the insurance companies eyes but are priceless to the owner.

May want to look into simplesafe. I am still in the planning stagest of my shop, but a friend of mine got this and its a DIY installation, cell phone connection, and runs a long time on batteries if needed. IF you have reception in your area this could be good.

All cameras do is collect evidence to be used after the fact.
They do not prevent a crime.

Look at all the bank and convenience store robberies.
If you are smart enough to tie your shoes, you got to know there are cameras involved.
It doesn’t stop them.

For prevention I think you need someone living there.
Find someone you know, love, or at least have mutual respect with, and have them move in.
With a big dog.
(An ornery old man with a reputation for sleeping with a shotgun may be perfect.)

I would not suggest a good looking female.
Having one of them alone in the far boonies brings up another whole list of possible problems.

You can get a motion sensor camera system with an autodial feature, use a cell phone for the auto-dial, that will call you on your smartphone and you can watch what's going on. There was a guy on CL around here that sold and installed a basic system a while back starting at $800.

This! Now add voice capability so that you can speak to the guy who has broken in. All you have to say is. "What are you doing?" Watch him run.

Cameras linked into a surveillance system do more then after the fact, they can alert you to a break in at the moment it detects activity. Even the cheaper setups allow you to trigger an email, text message etc from the system when motion is detected.
I have a really cheap 'dropcam' at the moment, but it sends me an instant message as soon as it senses motion. I have it setup in my sliding glass window, pointed towards my shop. It works well, when delivery truck shows up I know. If a thief were to show up I'd be alerted and could call barney fife.
I am not overly concerned about break-ins when I am home because my 12guage pump under the bed with 00 buckshot gives me piece of mind.

Spend your money and time on devices that keep them out before they get in. If they see things happening or things just aren't right they will move on to the next house that has not done anything at all to protect their assets.
