Trying to find a good replacement for old G.E. type R breakers.

I have an old G.E. panel in my home, and I want to upgrade the breakers. I find that the SquareD homeline breakers and other type BR breakers fit, but they seem to have more play side to side than the originals. The blade they clamp onto is rather thin. I'm wondering if this is safe.

If they aren't listed for the application, they aren't OK to use. If the panel is old enough that you need to swap out worn out breakers and none are available, it is time to replace the panel. They aren't designed to last forever, so this isn't out of the ordinary

You cannot put anything but GE breakers or classified breakers in a GE panel... Sq D and Eaton BR are not kosher for that panel.

SQ is not classified by UL to be used in any competitive panel EVER! Eaton BR is OEM for Challenger and BR panels made by Bryant, Westinghouse, Cutler-Hammer, & Eaton, that is it, Eaton CL is UL classified for most competitive 1" wide makes. GE is always the best choice for a GE panel. Wyliesdiesels already knows this, this is general FYI for others.

Thanks for the responses. I'm going to live with what I have until spring, then getting a new service. Current setup is a Zinsco meter base and load center with a G.E. sub panel. Early to mid '50's. Toast.

Yes, definitely toast. Replacing all of it is the right move
