I'm in the process of building (planning) my garage/shop and I need help getting ideas for trusses/rafters. This is my basic plan http://www.unclehowards.com/RVGaragesp/TheRamblersRetreatRVGarage.aspx What is the best way and/or most cost effective way to get head room/ceiling height in the loft? I would like to use the loft as my "man cave" to entertain for football games, poker nights, beer drinking, ect.
I'm not even going to pretend I know what I'm doing when it comes to this, I just know what I want. Any help would be great. Thanks

I was thinking about a knee wall. Would that change the roof line? I will be sitting down with the builder begining of next week. I know these are questions to ask him, but I would like to have a little ammo for the conversation. So Thanks for your input

OK, I would build a short knee wall around the living space on the second floor. This would put a small step in the ridge from the RV side to the living space. I think It would look nice that way. This will also let you run more of a pitch on the porch roof. Let me know if ya got any questions

I have an Uncle Howard's Barn and we love it. While we were talking through our project, we discussed raising the sidewall height, and they said they could do that for a couple thousand extra. After we got a first draft of the plan and saw how big the usable space was (there was only about 6' of lost space around the perimeter) we ended up nixing it. There is quite a bit of space in the loft already because the roof has a nice steep 8/12 pitch.

Good luck with your project!

If you're using a rafter design like UHB ( google dutch-english framing) has you will have legal head room under the roof support beams. The center aisle plus a few feet each side of the beams will be "usable". A knee wall will provide additional headroom but the ridge height of the roof on that section will no longer match the RV gable ridge, really hurting the overall lines of the building. Good luck!
