I’m trying to get a guy straight on the lighting in his new garage
He didn’t plan his lighting out
It’s a 34x26 with 9’ ceilings
He had the electrician put 6 round boxes in the ceiling
He went to HD or Lowe’s and found out the fixtures aren’t wide enough to cover the box
The builder that built it (and also built mine) called me asking about what lights I had. I have the Maxlites 4’ 2 lamp. 3” wide. I’m assuming the boxes are 4”
To get it right I think he would need more than 6 fixtures
The bad thing is the boxes are installed and Sheetrock is in the ceiling
What would be the best he could do
8’ 3 bulb fixtures maybe
Thanks

??? Maybe not understanding....use a box cover with a punch out. Use conduit putting to connect the cover and fixture.

Like Kaizen said, use a cover with a knock out in the center. Paint them ceiling color, probably white. People don't look up, nor will they spot a 1/2" of the cover sticking out beyond the fixture, especially with the lights on.

If he needs more boxes, is there access to the attic space ? Add some more boxes where you need them. They make round boxes for old work.

I guess I wasn’t clear on my question. Sorry
With only using 6 fixtures what would be the best choice for a light fixture and bulbs

Definitely more fixtures is right
I don’t know if he will pay more to the electrician since the boxes are already installed and everything is hard-wired

They make fixtures that will fit over those boxes. Actually putting a cover with a small knockout in it, and then putting the fixture on top of that( I assume that's what your talking about) creates a code violation if there are splices in those boxes. The splices must be accessible from inside the fixture. All splices must be accessible, and by having to remove the fixture to get to the splices is not accessible. I would repost this on the sticky thread on lighting fixture layout, there are knowledgeable people on there that can tell you how many and what kind of fixtures for that size of building

I just put nine fixtures in my 30 x36 garage I am very happy with it they are the ones in a sticky under Electrical have your friend run conduit from the end of one to the beginning of the next for any spaces that don’t have boxes. I only used 3 boxes at the end of 3 runs.

Use one of the covers with two outlets in it. That effectivley doubles the number of light fixtures. I would suggest a hanging type of florescent fixture. Wire the fixture with a pig tail and plug them in. The length of the pig tail will let them be placed anywhere on the cieling.

Assuming he can crawl up in the attic, it is TRIVIAL to add boxes/lights. Piece of Romex and a box...done.

Now, if the spacing is wonky, maybe more of a challenge.

Could add a string of lights along the side with workbenches, so the light is concentrated there. One string for general lights (ie the 6 already installed) and another bank of say 3, that cover the rear wall/benches.

just an idea.

This 86fc layout almost hits the 93fc @ 30" work plane recommended for wrenching.

That's what I was getting at.

I've had good luck doing the simple 8' four bulb T8 fixtures from HD or Menards. Opt not to use regular fluorescents but drop in LED conversions bulbs and be done.

Got some more info
Turns out the guy is just using the garage for parking, not even putting shelves in it
He has another smaller garage to piddle around in
The guy that built mine and his said he was 70 and doesn’t do much any more
Said he was just gonna put some fluorescents in there
Oh well I was trying to help
I appreciate all the responses from you guys

Well if he's just parking in there, 6 bulb holders with some LED bulbs will be more than enough and probably the cheapest.

I'd tell him to avoid using CFLs too.
