I'm not familiar with drill presses but I've been watching craigslist here lately for one and haven't had a lot of luck. I found this one that is listed at an auction tomorrow.. but couldn't identify it through the side picture.

Can anyone identify this and tell me if it's worth messing with.. and if so.. what would you give for it.

This will just be for around the house and occasionally on metal fab hobbies.

Thanks

Looks to be a generic import. $50-100 if operating good.

As said generic import. Its missing 2 of three handles; a minus, it does have the table lifter, a plus, and a rotary table another plus.

IF the quill slop is minimal, and IF the spindle bearings are good, and IF it has 16 speeds, maybe 100.

If it is worn out sloppy, walk away (drop the quill about 1/2 way and see how much slop it has side to side). If it only has 4-5 speeds, it's only really good for wood working, and I'd pay less. (but I wouldn't buy an import for wood only personally. YMMV)

I asked a co-worker who goes to a lot of auctions and actually lives fairly close to this one and he said it's an old cabinet shop that's going out of business.

The building was originally a skating rink.

I just bought a 16 1/2" 12 speed Delta floor model 17-900 in real decent condition for $100. They are out there. Look for older models. Delta/Rockwell Walker Turner, Duro, Buffalo, Baldor, even older Craftsman... The old stuff is usually cast iron as opposed to tin and better constructed. You can buy a lot for $50-$100.

Thanks for listing those brands. I've noticed that not everyone lists their drill presses with generic search names on craigslist such as "drill press". Those names will make my search more productive.

Just be sure to get something cast iron. Ask if it's really heavy...
