WOW, thanks everyone for so many fast responses. i will try to answer all the questions here
i do have a mitre saw, and very quickly learned money spent on a blade is money well spent. my jaw dropped the first time i used a good blade vs the one that came with it.
as far as materials i would say a little of everything is possible, the cuts will most likely be ripping long pieces, but not necessarily 4 x 8 sheets (probably use a circular saw to start if i worked with something that big) also looking to bevel cuts on long pieces

It sounds like you're set on getting a table saw, but I just wanted to throw something out there for you to consider. A friend of mine is a remodeling contractor, so he has a portable table saw. But for his garage, he installed a radial arm saw (RAS) along the back wall with long infeed and outfeed tables. That's his saw of choice when he's working at home, because it's a lot more useful and accurate than his portable table saw. He can even rip plywood easily by turning the blade 90 degrees and sliding the sheets along the tables. He said he wanted a cabinet saw, but he didn't have room in his garage for it, so the RAS was a good substitute.
