After doing a bunch of research online, including here, I modified my TSC JobSmart blast cabinet to work perfectly now. Instead of completely writing the entire modification process here, here's the link to my blog explaining it. Warning- it's a photo heavy and long write-up!

The only thing I have left to finish this project is to add risers (legs, in effect) to the top of the white cabinet on wheels, to make the height of the blast cabinet correct for my height. Doing it this way will still allow complete portability of the cabinet- I can remove it from the stand and take it anywhere and use it at it's stock height.

Thanks for that.
I was looking at small cabinets over the weekend and decided to pull the trigger on this unit last night. Now I just have to find a local store that has one in stock ...

SRVCTEC.....thank you for posting this. I have the same exact cabinet and was about ready to throw it in the dumpster. It gets more media on the outside than it does on the inside. I can see that I will be making some mods to it. :rocker:

Thanks, guys! I updated the post to include some of the shortcomings of this cabinet and a couple more pics- one of package for the light I purchased from Menards and another showing the interior lit up with both lights on.

A very nice write up. I wholeheartedly recommend and second the caulking or sealing of all joints.

The dust deflector over the holes, I'm curious as to why you put it that way. Any dust still in the air will settle down and that will act like a funnel to the holes. Flipping it 180° it becomes more of a cover and will direct any lingering dust to slide back down into the hopper and not to the holes.

Very nice. I was thinking about a small blaster for gun parts as a "Clean" unit. Good to see the cheap ones can be made serviceable.

The intake airflow keeps the bottom of the deflector clear. As long as I leave the Shop Vac on for a few seconds after blasting, the residual dust and media settles in the hopper area.

As mentioned in the blog post, the main reason for mounting the deflector that way is to keep the air that is rushing in, flowing up against the top window, to keep it clean (Plexiglass has a tendency to get a static charge when a bunch of miniature particles are flying around in the air). If it were mounted 180°, the intake air would be rushing (much lower) directly across the media as it comes out of the nozzle and is blasted at the object being blasted. Also, because of me being right handed and pointing the gun to the left mostly, the media would have a tendency to go up under the opening (if it were 180°) and bounce out the holes because of the pressure.

Since finishing your design changes....any other issues? Hind sight. Do you need that many holes in the cabinet for needed air flow?

Yeah, I need to redo the deflector since a small amount of media seems to make its way out onto the floor. I have an old plastic container that I'm going to cut one end off of and mount it over the inlet holes which should prevent any media (or at least greatly reduce it) from escaping. Other than that, it works fine.

Bringing one back that's been dormant a while.
Just picked up this cabinet and it has changed since the original post. The feed is now at the bottom and the bottom is a 4 sided sort of funnel shape kind of like the mods shown above. Only problem I've encountered so far is the seal at the door on top. Media is escaping right into my face! Any of you have a fix for this?

I was actually thinking something along those lines, but might make a second gasket out of fish tank (surgical) tubing.

I just got some weather stripping and used that all around the top where the lid makes contact. There is still a very small amount of media that makes it out, but not much.
