what machining are you capable of?

some parts for the benders are 3/4inch or thicker

I've used the Got Trikes palns and love my bender. There was a lot of easy machining involved in building it but since that's what I do it was not a problem for me.

"Rowing that boat" would kill me. Air over hydro or straight hydro is the only way to go.

I love my JD2 with H-F air over hydro.

How nice are the bends with this type of bender? What kind of tubing are you bending?
It sure looks like it could do better than those cheap ram style ones.
I like it.

Thanks Gauder, gonna print them out. Nastyzen, what bender are you refering to when you say "ram style"? I dont know anything about benders. I plan on bending DOM for my Jeep, but I want to be able to buy pipe dies (1 1/2") for doing a handrail if need be. So I have to make sure that whatever bender I choose will accept both tube and pipe dies.

I use my JD2 bender for building cages, rocksliders etc. There seems to be no deformation of the tube. I wouldn't try bending thin exhaust tubing with it though.

Check out there home page: http://www.jd2.com/

Yup, you can buy round tubing dies, pipe dies and square tubing dies for the jd2.

Many automotive outlets have the cheepo POWER FIST brand. I think King has them as well.
Basically, it's a frame that houses the hydraulic cylinder witch has a half round die on top of it and ether two rollers or shoes that fit in the top of this frame. There is a series of holes so you can move these top dies around for various rads.
I've seen them for under 200 bucks. They do the job but bend quality is not great, specially in lighter gauge.
The design of the one pictured in ibedayank's post looks closer to the mandrel type. Looks simple enough and seems to make nice bends.

nasty yes it is a mandrel bender just more simplified and cheaper to build using the bottle jack uses the same dies as the other benders

Where are the holes(circled) on the plate? What is the distance for the question mark? Or am I missing something

I checked my dies and some have them and some do not. They are on 2, 2-1/2 or 3" bolt circle depending on the size of the dies. Some are 1/2" some are 1". I do not remember ever using them.
