tube notcher project.

had a job that required a lot of notches in tubing. i have wanted a better way than angle cutting and grinding so after a little research on various designs and a look at the scrap available this is what i came up with.

started off by cutting off a piece of 2" plate

remove metal till you have this

make some clamps

a support arm and bearing block.

pivot pin

drill shaft

the completed project

Totally awesome !!!! My favorite is the pic with the hacksaw. It must have took two days and four guys to cut it with that.

Great job! Alnost seems like the main plate could have been about 3" shorter, or is there a reason for the extra plate and hole locations? Arm too tired to cut it off with the hacksaw?

time about 20 hours. the notcher was built so that it could notch in bends. then you need to clamp onto the flat plate.

forgot the angle question. in my experience you very rarely know the angle you want to cut. you measure the angle with an angle finder and transfer that to the notcher. my notcher has large flats so that setting the angle is easy.

No way that was done with a hacksaw. The only way to do something like that quickly is to use an EDM.

Hey that looks like a neat project well done, I did try to make a tube knocker, after seeing the ones that are for sale here in the UK, then i looked at my lathe and its tool post and figured that i would mod the tool post to fit and hold the tube. After seeing your solution to this i will steal your idea and adapt it to what i have. Thank you for posting your project.
