Putting the final touches on an insulated enclosure. Need to insulate the doors and find a place for the fan switch box. Anxious to see how much the noise level drops.

That looks like a great idea. Please keep us posted on how it works out. I would be nervous the plastic would get heated up and sag/fail with extended use, say in a power outage where we tend to run our generator all day (shut it off at night).

Our houses here in our neighborhood are all on top of each other and I've been thinking I need to build some type of sound muffling enclosure for our generator. Thankfully we have not had to use it in the 2.5 years we've been here, although everyone that lives here says power outages are common. Which makes no sense, but I would still like to be prepared just in case.

No not an invertor but that would of been nice. Wanted dual fuel and a higher wattage and invertor would of broke the bank.
It has AVR for the TV and the whole shop has been powered up. Run 240V Tig, air compressor and ac, just not at the same time.
Not sure what temp range it needs to run in to keep it happy but time will tell.
The vent and fan seen to move a lot of air so that's good.

Have you run it for awhile closed? I built a wooden one for protection as well as noise reduction. Not anywhere near as quiet as I would have liked. And it can’t get enough clean air coming in to stay running. Now I just keep it in the garage.

I built an enclosure for ours that runs our trailer. Routed exhaust to outside of trailer and installed a 6" inline style furnace fan that has some pretty good speed to it that ***** the hot air from the enclosure to a vent door outside of the trailer. It's done a nice job of keeping noise down (genny wasn't too loud to begin with) and have had no issues with heat build up, fumes or air getting to the genny.

The air intake/filter is about 6 inches from the 14x18" vent. The 12" fan is more then sufficient to move air. It is totally enclosed with 1.5" Roxul high temp insulation. I don't foresee melting the enclosure and it will be as cool and quite as possible.
Sitting in all day shade couldn't hurt either.

Thanks, I missed that thread in my search.
I'll be able to lift the lid and stick a thermometer down through the insulation into the enclosure. Hopefully the next time the power goes out it won't be 110, but with all the airflow it should be ok.

Outside air temp 84, Inside shaded shed 82.5 before start.
Ran it 30 minutes.
Hottest spot inside the box on a bracket 10" from the exhaust exit on fan side 111.
A brace directly above the center of the generator 89.
External engine temp above drain plug 140, intake vent side.
It appears the fan and vent size and position are perfect.
The temps here will increase a lot but seems the unit will run in an acceptable range.

Decibel readings, next to open doors 85. Shut 74. Sitting on patio 20' away 66-68.

Yes it is a Suncast. 4'5"w x 2'9"d.
Was going to build one but this worked out great.

This is mine, but a Rubbermaid shed. It's a HF 6500, with a solar charger on the lid to keep the battery charged. I've got the clamp light in there for night time, and a FE in case of fire (did have one once). I just leave the doors open as I'm in the country and no one close. The shop is over 100' from the house.

It appears by the numbers posted above and another good run today it will be just fine.
With fresh air forced around it, top bottom and sides with wrapped exhaust and an outside exit it's not much hotter then sitting outside in stagnant air.

His thread makes me wonder if anyone's used one of these sheds for a compressor? SEEMS like with vents and fans it could work.

I did a similar thing in my 12' x 8' shed. Two gable vents, a 1400 cfm gable fan that plugs into the genny, and an outlet box on the shed. The fan comes on at 60° F, and so far it has worked great. On a 84° F day I had a 30° F rise at the outlet of the fan. If I open the doors and windows it goes down to 10°, but it's because the outside air is just getting pulled right out the fan. The interior temps with the doors closed were well within the operating range of the genny.
Now I can lock my genny up while it's running and a bonus is I get some noise reduction.

Thanks 58, I use my Lifetime shed the same way but wondered the best way to keep the battery charged. I now have a solar charger on order thanks to your post. I will add a light just as you have for the ultimate in convenience.

My dad has a slightly smaller rubbermaid shed for his. The exhaust is on the front side of his generator, so he just opens 1 door while it's running. There is also an old box fan plugged in pulling air from a vent on the side.
