Thought I would share with you guys an awesome project a good friend of mine is working on... a TURBINE Batmobile.

The engine is a decomissioned military helo turbine. The video below is the first start up sequence before it can fire up. He is doing a complete double check this week before he can do a complete start.

Enjoy!

The wuss never turn on the ignitors or induced fuel. Call me back when he lights it off.

I would rather have Jay Leno's Eco Car

Fair enough and I would probably agree with having Leno's car. However, that's an apples to oranges comparison with regard to budget and the car overall.

I think all of us in the GJ group can agree that REAL men (and women) have cars that are built, NOT bought. Pretty confident that Leno didn't turn a wrench. Just sayin'.

Also, I will agree that Leno has a mass of sweet cars.

Leno never turned a wrench on the Blastolene Bros car - he just bought it outright

I agree, this bloke deserves credit for doing it himself.

Nice! Do you have a link to any details on the build? Does he have a forum he discusses this on?

I'd love to know more about the transmission in particular. I'm curious what the output shaft speed on the gearbox is......

In Jay's defense, he is probably one of the biggest car guys on the planet. He knows more about just about every car built than anyone. He has does plenty of wrenching and building of cars. I am willing to bet the he spends more time in his "garage" (17,000 sq foot warehouse) than most members of this forum.

Oh, and the Batmobile is bad a**.

Ive heard of Leno's being one, but other than that have never seen a streetable turbine car, and personally know of about 10 turbine cars. Please keep us updated as I would be curious how he solves the various drive problems associated with these.

Jay owns one of the Chrysler turbine cars. There is a video of him driving it.

Chrysler managed to make them streetable and produced a few. Cost and the fuel crisis put them to an end though.

that's pretty slick Kenneth.. any idea what model of turbine is in there? looks like a T-53 lycoming kinda... but doesn't really sound like one.. and the accessory gearbox looks a little different than the ones I've worked on, BUT, if it was pulled out of a different heli model than I've worked on that would explain it....

That had zero to do with why Chrysler destroyed all but four of the Exner-styled Turbine cars. The first "fuel crisis" was in 1973-74, BTW...The 55 rolling bodies were built in Italy, and the engines and transmissions were built and installed in the US. Chrysler "lent" these cars out to selected people for two weeks at a time, each, for just over a year. In the meantime, Chrysler had not paid import duties on any of the cars, and Uncle Sam wanted his chunk of change. Chrysler had already accomplished what they wanted to with the cars, and did not want to pay the import taxes. So, nearly all were very unceremoniously crushed, instead.

Chrysler built Turbine cars in several different bodies, from 1954 all the way up to 1981.

Silent video of the Chrysler Turbine cars being destroyed, it is heart-rending!

You would have him light the candle right there in his shop?

I looked at the real movie Batmobile at the Peterson Museum and it's powered by a stock block V8 with Harrier dumps on the sides. I think they said they had to dry sump the motor to hang it so low in the chassis which is a passenger car frame.

This is a turbine powered tractor, it is a replica of an actual "test bed/demo" tractor that IH made to show the durability of their hydro static transmissions.

My Father worked for Chrysler during the 60's on the NASA Saturn V project. He got an opportunity to drive one of those cars when they brought them to New Orleans. I remember him commenting that on the positive side it would run on anything liquid and flammable; on the downside the throttle lag took some getting used to. I saw one of the last of these at a concours at Amelia Island a few years ago.

That is truly surreal! What a sound from something you would never suspect. Thanks for sharing and opening my eyes to this rare piece.
